First post here.
I am looking to get a new set of tyres to replace the magic mary/hans dampf combo on my giant reign. Have decided on a maxxis minion dhf 3c wt for the front, but don't know what to put on the back.
Between the dhr2 and aggressor (both will be wt). My problem is that most of my riding in the borders is varied, going from loose trail centre tracks to the slippy mud/steep trails at golfie and the like, and everything in between.
Would appreciate any opinions and user experience of either tire in these sort of conditions.
DHR2 on the front SS rear

No thanks, already made the mistake of putting a dhr on the front last year, never crashed so much. Heard the ss is good but it has no braking grip
Magic Mary front DHR2 rear is a great year round set up in the Tweed Valley.

Have heard that as a good setup. But I want to move away from the magic mary, I don't like the way it has tons of grip then loses it suddenly. Also doesn't seem to have that much grip, considering the drag from it.
Minion dhf seems to be a popular choice in the tweed valley. Plus lewis buchanan uses it on these sort of trails, so if its good enough for him, its certainly good enough for me...
if you're looking for one rear tyre for the different trails and seasons the tweed valley has to offer the dhr2 is probably that tyre.
the aggressor is also an excellent rear tyre, slightly faster rolling than a dhr2 but in mud it clogs much quicker. in the dry and on rocks it's excellent. fwiw I'm using a wtb breakout at the moment which is similar and a bit cheaper. bigger volume than maxxis tyres, which is nice.
I know you didn't ask about front tyres but give the wtb convict a look for something between a mary and a minion.
Aggressor if it’s dry.
DHR2 if it’s moist.
dhr2 dual compound wins on the back for basically being able to do anything, pretty well. Aggressor is better at some stuff but it doesn't have that same allround competence. I'll throw on a rock razor or minion SS when it's properly dry or if I don't think I'll be embracing any peril for a bit but only because I'm lazy and 5 minutes in the garage is worth it
I sometimes like to use my rear wheel to slow down when travelling in a straight line so minion ss and rock razor are of limited use to me.
Cheers for the suggestions, sounds like the dhr2 is the better choice than the agressor, especially since I do like having the braking grip on the steep stuff.

Had looked into the wtb convict but have heard of mixed reviews with them, think I'll probably stick with maxxis, with a dhf/dhr2 combo
I have the dhf 2.5wt on the front of my bike with the dhr2 on the rear in 2.3. Both are Exo 3c and has been good over the winter for trenriding I do which is mostly trail Centre stuff.
If it gets sloppy both of those tyres are out of their comfort zone - I’d think the Mary would be the better option for lots of wet natural riding. For me the dhf is perfect all year round.
The dhr2 has done pretty well over the winter on the rear - my bike came with t on ge front and I hated it there. It seemed to grip to a certain point then just wipe out suddenly. Had a few crashes as a result. Happy with it on the back though - it drives forward and brakes well and is just he right amount of grip in corners. On my bike I ride with my weight asbfar forward as possible and that lets the rear slide a bit if you want it to.
However, it is a little bit draggy - for the summer I’m going back to the aggressor on the rear that was on there May-October last year. It rolls faster but still grips in the corners. On damp and dry centres (but not really muddy) it’s great.
Just to muddy the water, I actually like the Rekon WT alot. At first I didnt but once I got the pressures dialled its actually a super fast but decently grippy tyre that doesn't totally fail in the wet.
Its worth noting though the 2.5WT Aggressor is better in the wet than its 2.3 sibling.
swap tyres - I've got a minion SS for pretty much most conditions and a projekt baron for the slop.
I’ve DHR2 2.4 wt dual comp on the rear of my Jeffsy and was very impressed with grip and rolling resistance. Replace d a Purg 2.3 that was just too narrow and had no side tread. The DhF on the front is great but gets a bit clogged if the mud is thick. Both of these are 29 flavours. I want to try an aggressor when it gets a bit drier.

That's what I was thinking, thought I could get away with the 2.5 aggressor rather than the 2.4 dhr2 and get lower rolling resistance with decent grip still.

I have to accept that the dhf will get overwhelmed by the mud, but it's difficult to find a true all round tire, the dhf is probably one of the closest to being a true all rounder.
DHR2 is a better all-rounder than a DHF, especially on the front. It works better in more varied conditions than the DHF.
Convict is also a very good front tyre. It's better rolling, more reliable on mixed surfaces tyre than the Shorty. A great autumn/winter tyre if you ride everything from hardpack to loam.
You’ll be surprised how well a minion SS hooks up in most conditions.
I use Magic Mary & Minion DHF 3c on front depending on where & when I'm riding, find the MM better on everything apart from dry hardpack trail centre stuff, usually run a dhr2 or high roller 2 on the rear, not 3c tho. Magic Mary both ends if it's really wet and I'm riding steep stuff, only done this 4 racing tho
Its worth saying that the 2.5 (or even better 2.6) version of the DHF is way better in the wet than its 2.3 option. Its actually a pretty legitimate mud option.

I think it'll a good dry weather tyre, but I can't see it gripping well in the steep muddy trails. Would buy one if the trails get dusty and stay that way, but being Scotland, don't think that'll ever happen.
Lots of people here seem to be rating the wtb convict, I may have a look into it, tread does seem like it would be good at dry and wet conditions.
The weird thing about the semislicks is they actually grip more when the ground's a bit soft- because the tyre can cut in more and get the side treads down (which happens real fast with the Minion anyway, the Rock Razor has its side treads a bit further round/up) I get on OK with them at the golfy and the like if it's wet-ish but not when it's full on winter-slop-wet. Though pedalling up can be annoying.
I guess put it another way, I could have a dhr2 as my only rear tyre all year round, can't think of anything else that's really true of, but it's definitely not the case for the SS
lean the SS over onto the sideknobs and you can maintain grip same as you can on it's smaller Blingy faethir. 😉
I've always got on just fine with their entire family year after year all year round no matter what the conditions.
Combined with a DHR2 upfront you don't really need the rear to brake brilliantly on steeps. One of those will stoppie down the steepest bits of Thornie in the wet. and both will rail the catch berm/ruts like a DHF.

Agreed. But wet Golfie trails? You have bigger balls than me. It's my favourite rear tyre… but the OP is wise to stay well clear given his requirements.
My balls are actually quite small but this also means I have the ability to suck them up at will like Bruce Lee. I also possess the ability not to lose the plot when a steep well established trail becomes wet.
