Looking at bib shorts and 3/4 lengths and thinking about the dhb Aeron range.
I currently use Rapha Classic and Castelli Nanoflex which cost considerably more! I’ve been reading reviews and the dhb Aeron range appears to come out very well.
Any thoughts on their range of bibs please and how they compare to the Rapha Classic?
Thanks.
They're all I ever use. Can't compare to the premium brands but I find them very comfortable. A good balance of quality and price.
They’re good value, but not in the same class as the high-end brands.
I have a pair they are pretty good. Doubt they compare to much more expensive ones though I wouldnt know. Size up a bit big imo or maybe its my skinny legs!!
One thing I would say is I’m a 30” waist and and 36” chest and I ordered a small in the bibs. Could hardly get them over my knees!
Medium are a snug fit. On the first few rides the pads were uncomfortable but they are fine now after a few washes, I would buy them again.
I bought Galibier instead of DHB. They were same cost, but the reviews were better.
They're absolutely superb. Most comfy shorts I've had, well made, great pad. Galibier size advice is spot on too.
Thanks guys - so pretty ‘average’ then.
Maybe Endura FS260 might be a better option (I have a couple of their cheaper range bibs and they are ‘okay) just trying not to spend Rapha / Assos money if it’s not needed.
I have Castelli and DHB Aeron bibs and I find the DHB more comfortable. I think DHB Aeron is as good as anyone else, just doesn't have the brand exclusivity which comes from charging 3x as much!
Size up a bit big imo or maybe its my skinny legs!!
I found the opposite. Earlier this year I ordered four or five different DHB bib shorts in the same size (XXL, I think) and the Aerons were significantly smaller than the others. In the end I went with the Classics which seem to suit me fine.
Oddly enough it was to replace an older pair of Aerons which I never really got on with: for some reason they always sent Jimmy and The Twins down between my left thigh and the saddle, which wasn't exactly ideal.
I've got a couple of pairs some sort of other DHB Roubaix 3/4s which have been brilliant, I've done hours and hours in those. Maybe I just don't get on with Aerons.
I’ve got a pair of the “Aeron Roubaix 3/4” bibs. Actually wore them today. I’m 5 foot 8 and 70kgs, size small is fine.
Most of my cycling clothing is Rapha, Assos and Isadore, the DHB Aeron don’t feel any lower quality.
I also have a pair of Aeron Roubaix 3/4 in medium I think, they're a few years old now and still Very comfortable, being lined there is less stretch to them but the sizing is pretty much in line with other DHB stuff, and they do work well in colder weather.
But the knees are full of holes where I've been over in them a couple of times on ice, they've been badly sewn/superglued back together by me and I'm ok with them, but if I were looking again now I'd prefer separate lined bib shorts and knee warmers if possible just to head that issue off...
My bib longs are all warm version DHB aeron and are very comfy and long lasting. They aren’t as good as my bib shorts which are all Endura Pro SL, but they are good enough for my needs.
@cookeaa - sorry for being a bit dim, what do you mean by lined bib shorts? My 3/4s are the bib long with the fleecy Roubaix. Is there a short where there is a separate lining? (Hope that doesn’t sound sarcastic, just never noticed shorts like that)
I agree with your sentiment about bibs with knee warmers, but would need to be a thermal or Roubaix bib, my lower back and bum gets cold in normal bibs and leg warmers.
Sorry I'm thinking of Roubaix as 'lined' if you follow me...
But yeah they do do a 1/2 leg Roubaix as well, which would be my choice now, with knee warmers, as my old 3/4 leg Roubaixs are shredded at the knees...
I take a medium in DHB aerons and a large in Castelli. My bibs are pretty good, nice pad but I think the newer ones are a different design.
I moved onto Sportful from a couple of pairs of Castelli (prior to them I was a DHB boy but that'd be way over 5yr ago so not relevant to their new stuff)
Sportful's pads (esp the TC pro but also the anonymous blue one in their wtaer-resistanty slightly fleecy one) suit me better and their legs seem better designed than Castelli's too
Haven't bought any for a couple of years but in my mind they're cheaper than Castelli by quite a margin
Thanks all for your input, much appreciated.
I had a pair and sent them back, after about 6 rides of maybe 70 to 80 miles each they were all pulling on the inside of the leg. The fabric looked a mess. I have morvelo and gore stuff of a similar price that's years old and never had this.
I wouldn't buy again.
