hi,

I need some advice on DH bikes please.

My son wants one so it's likely we'll be getting one at some point soon.  He wants a YT tues or a nukeproof Dissent, both of which seem good bikes but obviously going and sitting on one in a shop isn't possible.

He currently rides a medium Nukeproof mega 290 carbon with 180mm forks which he'll keep for everything other than full on DH riding.

Question is, with the above 2 bikes in mind, should I be looking at similar geometry numbers to his current bike or are DH bikes completely different fit?

For example, his current bike has a reach of 455 and stack of 621. For similar numbers, that puts him on a large YT tues (which he's right at the bottom end of the height guide for) and a small/ medium in the nukeproof  (which he's right at the top of the height chart for but then the next size up isn't much larger).

We're going over to a shop an hour away at the weekend for a look/ sit on a couple of used models there but some knowledge on this in advance of that is really appreciated!

Reach on DH bikes is shorter than trails generally.

My lad is on an R2 and 5'11

465mm seems to be the reach on that. But the stack at 639 is high i think ? Certainly feels it when you sit on it, front end feels riidculously high compared to back end, even in full 29er.

They look loads smaller in standover too.

If you're near FoD this weekend you could sit on a fair few bikes on Sunday in pits... Ours included but we know a load of people who'll be on DH's.

How old is he and is he likely to grow much more?

He’s 14.5 so yeah, definitely going to get bigger.

as he’s the top end of most medium sizes he’ll probably end up with a larger size that he can grow into. Slightly too big is better than too small I hope.

Weeksy, he  will be at the fod race at the weekend so I’ll tell him to sit on some of his mates DH bikes there thanks. Not sure why I didn’t think of that before!

Thanks both.

thanks weeksy but today i bought one of the nukeproof dissent frames reduced on CRC so just need to build that up and he'll be sorted.  Bit of a punt but at that price it's probably worth it.

YT size up small for a given size - if you normally ride a medium you're a large in YT land
