Just managed to somehow get my rear mech into the wheel, ripping it off & sending it round to smack hard into the driveside seat stay & snapping it - fortunately managed to stay on & bring it to a halt without crashing!
So, what are my options re fixing it, or buying a replacement frameset?
Anyone got a link to those nice chinese carbon builders?
Without wanting to kick a man when he's down, how did that happen JRA?
Anyway, my condolences, as you've not had it long have you? 🙁
If not too bad, then look at getting a repair, or maybe you can get a discounted crash replacement?
Bummer.
I went down on some black ice yesterday while out on my nice road bike - and thought I'd broke it for a sec.
Give HQ Fibre a bell regarding a fix, they're quite reasonably priced and have a great reputation.

Cheers fellas 🙂
Yeah just bimbling along at 13mph into the wind & i felt the mech attempt to ghost shift, next thing the mech is in the wheel & snaps the hanger then goes right round with the wheel & slams into the driveside seatstay. Cracked all the way round and blew a large chunk of material away from the other side.
Only had it since September, done about 1000 miles maybe?
Bugger.
Mm, beat me to it!
i was there just a couple of weeks ago....
Ouch! Hope you can get it fixed. Depending on manufacturer you may be able to get a "crash replacement" frame at a reasonable cost.
Having worked in a LBS it's worth contacting the Bike/Frame maker to ask about a crash replacement/factory repair. That way frame weight unaffected and you keep your original frame guarantee as bike is pretty new.Hope this helps.
Carbon is quite fixable, question is whether it's cost effective vs a new frame. Good luck.
MEKK Potenza 5.0 SL frame, i've mailed them a request to see if/how much a replacement would be so just wait and see now.
It's actually a really nice riding frame, very comfy so would like to stay with MEKK if possible - plus not many other firms offer a 44cm frame at my price point!
First bike frame i've ever broken in over 15yrs of hobby riding & 30yrs of commuting so not too bad i suppose..
Its quite common for this to happen. Caused by either...
poor mech setup (limits not set)
damaged chain (catchs inner or outer plate on r.mech and snags it)
damaged mech hanger (if the bike falls on that side, replace the mech hanger before riding it again).
HQ fibre is who I would reccomend, sent them loads of frames requiring various repairs which are now all out there being ridden without issue. There are cheaper repair companies, but for just a seat-stay its an easy fix.
Then its just paint you have to worry abuot.
First call is bike shop/ mftr/ distro and see if they do a crash replacement though.
damaged mech hanger (if the bike falls on that side, replace the mech hanger before riding it again).
This thread had already made me realise I need to check this out after going down on the drive side yesterday. Shifting did seem a bit out afterwards.
And also need to hurry up finishing my winter bike build.
The chain split link was broken when i finally untangled it, now whether that was the cause or a symptom i've no idea.
I'd fettled the gears the weekend before, got them running nice and smooth - or so i thought. I can't honestly say it wasn't my set up that was the cause but the gears were running smoothly on the bike stand.
I can definitely recommend getting it fixed - all the companies previously mentioned are good - but you can also do it yourself if you're feeling adventurous/ on a budget - I have built my own frame after realising how easy it is to repair them, and I'm currently building my second frame due to the success of the first! 🙄
I can recommend Easy composites for supplies and guide videos, but there are plenty on youtube too. Feel free to email me if you want any specific advice and I'll keep an eye on this thread 😀

Darren will also hopefully be quoting a repair for me too, dropped my Nanolight getting it off the car rack yesterday.
Landed top tube first on a brick wall 🙁
The chain split link was broken when i finally untangled it, now whether that was the cause or a symptom i've no idea.
I had a chain split at the quick link, which jammed it in the first jockey wheel. It was just too wide to get through, ripped the mech clean off as i was cranking up hill. Luckily for me it was a steel Summer season, so the knuckle on the mech shredded rather than the frame.
Look at it as an opportunity to move all the bits over to a nice Ti frame? 😉
Nice carbon bike in winter?? 😯
Sorry to hear of your misfortune though, hope you get it sorted satisfactorily.
Had a message from MEKK to call them tomorrow about the options.
I'll see how much a potential replacement costs before i start looking at repairs or other frames.
Did the same in a race with my alloy TCR last week. New frame time too I think. See if you can find what locked the rear mech. It won't be the chain on your bike as it is pretty much new.
Carbon is more repairable than Allux SL 🙁
Bloody hell boys! Bad times, hope all gets sorted for not a lot of £££.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I can't be stopping young ladies at train stations again, using the flimsy excuse that some bloke I don't know and have never met might want a bike like yours and would you mind if I photograph [s]you[/s] er... it.
Get it repaired, call it the 'winter bike' and save up for something even cooler for the sunny days.
I'm pretty sure that it will be repairable, and if not, talk to brant about the smaller Planet X frames; a mates GF has just got one and it's a cracker.
Planet X frames are too big for me I'm afraid.
Going to find out the various price options before i decide, if i can get a replacement frameset for not much more than the cost of repair then I'd be daft not to really.
Not sure what caused it, just before it happened the gearing started to ghost shift, was tootling along wondering why when - BANG!
Can't honestly rule out my gear fettling was to blame but it was running fine on the stand last Saturday night.
I'll speak to Neil at MEKK in the morning, going to cry myself to sleep now..
Don't moan at yourself over it; I trashed a week old frame on a training run in Edenfield by riding over a piece of metal in the road the size of a pencil. Killed the derailleur, the hanger, the rear wheel and the cassette.
It occasionally happens.
Aye, happens. Was riding past some council workers strimming a verge, a stick flicked up into the mech which bent round enough to dent the seat stay and mangle the mech. Steel frame so was just a case of shortening the chain and SSing it to the nearest train station.
Also trashed one by running over a plastic carrier bag which wrapped around the mech and cluster.
Merlinman/aa, assume you both had repairs done...how did you get on?
Considering sending my Nanolight there since I'm guessing it's an easy fix for someone who knows what they're doing.
I also have a damaged Focus that could become a winter bike...
OP - Sorry to hear about your frame.
I am disappointed though. I expected it to involve rage and a vehicle mirror! 😆
It won't be the chain on your bike as it is pretty much new
hold that thought!
Giant and spesh both fit shimano chains to a lot of their bikes and you would be amazed how many fail within the first few miles due to worn/damaged tooling at the assembly line.
Basically the joining pin isn't fitted right and either the pin lets go of the plate or the outer plate cracks, catchs the mech and destroys wheels/frame/mech/hanger.
Shimano 105 chains are legendry, but the rest you need to be really careful of them.
also joining links, Sram don't trust the re-usable ones so generally you can only get the black 'permanent' ones for them. Seen many joining links fail, esp on MTB where they are used a lot removing /cleaning/refitting the chain.
just before it happened the gearing started to ghost shift
That's the clue. With no suspension to compress and alter cable runs a road bike should never ghost shift, I'd guess at broken chain, which then jammed somewhere.

I know slightly at odds to what I've said up there ^^, but I disagree with that, worked in a top Spesh dealer for 10 years and saw fewer than 5 fail in an unusually short space of time.
UPDATE: Spoke to the nice chap at MEKK today & the good news is that they do offer a crash replacement policy - the bad news is they have no 44cm frames in stock!
They are going to try to source me one from one of their retailers in the UK, if not then from a retailer in Taiwan. If that fails I'll have to wait til April for the next batch of frames to come in.
They do seem to be going the extra mile for me to find one so it bodes well.
Replacement price is only £250 as well, a lot less than i was expecting/fearing!
Nice end to the story that. 250 is not so bad considering.
I'm happy with the price, pity i need such an odd size!
They have some 'average' size frames for warranty replacements but apparently only EBC sell the 44cm in the UK.
I just looked at the mek website, never considered them before but that primo looks pretty nice. Cant see any weight details for it tho.
How does yours ride?
Sounds promising md, good luck...

I would be chuffed with that. Do you have to send back the old frame?
How does yours ride?
Like crap right now! 😆
Its a lovely bike to ride which is why i'm so keen to get a replacement.
Bearing in mind its my first proper road bike & that i bought the Potenza, which is designed to be their 'endurance' model i.e. a little more relaxed than the more race bred Primo its a fantastic bike for the money. Very comfy over 100 miles & seems to get up to speed really easily (my perception!) The tapered full-carbon forks do seem to keep the front end more stable than i was expecting as well.
Mine came with a 105 groupset but the brakes were Mekk branded jobs that scared me rigid - soon replaced them with 105 range calipers.
Over all its a lovely bike to ride, just makes me want to keep going 🙂
Jamie - yes, they want the old frame back. Seemed more worried about botched repaiur jobs ending up on E-bay and damaging the brand than looking at the damage, after all it was a mechanical wreck not a manufacturing failure.
