Has anyone bought direct from Ray at Derby wheels? What was the total including import etc?

I notice since I last looked they've gone up from the sale price of $299 each. I'm after some 35 wide 29er flavour.

I'm sure I read on here a while back gravity-sports were supplying these in the UK but for the life of me I can't get on their site. Are they still going?

I don't mind buying direct but would prefer if I can get them in the UK.

Thanks

I bought them, wouldn't buy them again and couldn't recommend them to you. Back wheel has a hole in it after only two months and the hassle/price of trying to get a new rim from the states is mindblowing. Crash replacement works out only a touch cheaper than RRP and then you have 60 dollars shipping and the price to get the wheel re-laced. I wouldn't mind but these wheels have never been crashed, it's just a rock that's flicked up!

Ray is a top bloke but buying Carbon goods with no UK back up will end with you losing lots of money. Trust me, I am the current Guinea Pig.....

I have a set of the LB 35mm hookless in 29er with Supercomps on Hope Pro 11s.

I don't really see the point in spending more, get a local guy to build all my wheels, they are rock solid.

I have a set and no issues with mine, build into a very stiff wheelset. JRA are doing the heavier duty ones at the moment. When i had the rims the carbon lay up and QC labels look identical to the LB factory....

Actually quite a few people have used the Lightbicycle crash replacement without any fuss. Maybe Derby just can't match their customer service?

To be fair to him, when I trashed one (which then on close inspection became 2 rims) he replaced them, and shipped them for nothing.

Granted I had to build them up again, but then I would expect that with any replacement rim.

My 650 rims are holding up this time around, but racing season is over & as a result, riding like a knob doesn't happen so much, lets see if they last the winter.

Got some Enve stickers too, for my free 10% come spring & dry trails 😉

Well that adds even more insult to injury, as he won't do for me.... He is saying crash replacement plus shipping. I can see how easy it is for him to do this though, as it's so obvious a rock has flicked up. However, he is telling me to order the DH rim instead of the HD to counter it ever happening again. Not much faith in your product with a recommendation like that.

22 years riding bikes, dings and scrapes in alloy rims but never has to retire one. 2 months on Carbon and its buggered already. Oh, and just to show it's not just me, here is a mates who had Finale EWS ruined because of this failure:

You pay your money, you take your chances, but I won't be again. Product doesn't stand up.

That's a fairly impressive crack!

I actually agree with your opinion, for harder riding I don't think carbon is a suitable material for rims. The only reason I still have these is because they were replaced.

I don't discriminate though, Easton, Enve & Derby have all been my victims 🙂

I've said it repeatedly before, and usually get flamed for it, but whack an alloy rim hard and you will probably ding it. Whack a carbon rim hard it can't ding, it can only deflect, or fail. I've seen quite a lot of cracked rims, from various brands racing this year.

It's good to get negative experiences as well as all the fawning over them IMO.

I do like the idea of light and very stiff wheels for my AM 29er but it's rocky on my local trails and I often ride in the Lakes or Peaks - trying to take technical rocky trails fast.

I dinged my Crossmax rim quite bad the other week attempting some Strava heroics, and I can't help thinking it'd all end in tears, jizz and splinters of plastic if I went carbon.

Actually quite a few people have used the Lightbicycle crash replacement

I find this a bit worrying to be honest, since there's a relatively small user base to begin with. Are you talking three people? 10 people? Dozens?

Handful- but then there's actually quite a lot of people using the LBs and have been for a while, and some of the folks using them really use them. Like, one of the breakages I know of was at the trans-savoie, and a mate of mine broke an Enve rim in the exact same place.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still tempted or I wouldn't be spouting off on the subject on here.

I just know how hard I'd end up kicking myself if I did shatter one!

And here lies the problem with carbon rims. Mine survived 6 days of racing at Trans Provence, not a scratch, then a couple of weeks later a rock skims up on a Shropshire double track and it looks like the hull of the titanic!

There's no guarantee when it's going to happen, but when it does it tends to be catastrophic and expensive.

I bought one in Aug 2013.

Been running it on the front. No problems so far a part from the creaky bladed spokes.

I've since purchased some LB 35mm rims, I'd probably buy them again.

Id like to take the risk and try carbon rims ,on a personal the back up from a UK dealer isn't important just read JRA are importing them well to be honest I live in outibridge and they are my local wheelbuilder, well they would be if they weren't so rude if you don't want to spend silly money.

Is it me or is Sheffield becoming a bit clique for mtb.

How much are JRA selling built up wheels for. I desperately want a set with hope hubs but don't want to spend a grand+. Im also not sure about importing myself. There is some guy on ebay selling them. He is offering 1 year manufacturing defect, & 2 years crash replacement for £719. Is that a good price?

I've been running my LB 29er 35mm for around four months, couple of marks but nothing major. Rimmed the back rim a few times and nothing. However I ran crests for 12 months so I'm not exactly hard on rims. But mine worked out less than £140 inc everything. Like nortwind said though, plenty of people have used the crash replacement thing, even when it wasn't really justified. Just ordered some 650b ones for my new KTM Enduro bike

I built my 29er wheelset with some pro2's and dt revolution for less than £500. You've just got to be smart buying the bits and pieces

Linky? the rims alone are 300 quid at JRA but TBH I'd rather eat shit than give them money even if they were cheaper.

Another Derby bites the dust...

[img] [/img]

unfortunately no crash replace (which at $195 isn't cheap and more $$ than lightBicycle retails their rims anyway) as I destroyed a friends wheel. Only lasted 4 days at Whistler when my on DH bike with FlowEx+Tk 2.4 has zero dings running low pressure as well for 3 years now. Not sure carbon and DH mix... this was heavy DH layout at 480gr 26"

also those rims are too wide for some tires (Conti TK 2.2 and even 2.4 don't work well, others like minion seem to).

Ouch. I wonder how much difference DH layup makes to surviving impacts like this - my instinct is not much.

There are a lot of rim eating horrible shaped rocks in the park though, and with DH speeds involved, carbon rims are a bit of a rich mans game here.

So many cracked carbon rims on bikes in the village. Granted, I have seen lots of totalled aluminium rims here too, but it's no so painful if you toast a £50 Flow vs a carbon rim (even a cheap one).

That said, mine are over a month in now and touch wood, no cracks yet. I'm not a park rat though, and generally only do a handful of runs a day in there.

I'm expecting them to be scrap by the time I go home though. i do keep checking them, just in case...

Haha, less than week later..

That now puts my tally of broken carbon rims to 5.

I've emailed Ray to see what he suggests this time round. To be fair, I did race my AM bike on what's probably the hardest Phat Wednesday DH race of the year in Whistler. That said, I didnt ding the rim anywhere nor did it flat.

Ive said before, I just don't think carbon rims are cut out for racing & riding at the gravity end of the scale for people who have to pay for kit.

I will be going back to Flows now, I'll keep the carbon rims as I want to build up a lightweight short travel trail rocket, so they can live on that and have an easier life.
