Reading that article makes me want to ride there ! Trouble is flights take nearly 40 hours and cost from £3695 !!!!!!😱😱😱😱😱
I must be way way off the STW financial demographic ??????Surely that is totally out of reach even for the majority of STW audience ?🤔🤔🤔🤔
When you say a lot less ?
Did a lot of shopping about to get the cheapest flights, van and food split three ways, the trip was defiantly on a shoe string but maybe a once in a lifetime experience. They did New Zealand on the way out.
Cost a lot less than that to do it all in.
You know that just because it's in the mag it's not compulsory to go there?
I used to read car magazines and want a Ferrari, but I didn't worry about the fact that me and 99.9% of the readership had no chance of achieving it.
I was quite inspired by the article.
I made me think that at some point I'd do a last round the world flight. Do relatives in oz, tasmania where I think have a mate that bikes, mates in Sidney. Then maybe stop at places to bike in the US and New Zealand on route. It would have to be there winter though.
It's possible to get to Hobart (and probably Launceston) in 24 hours with an on-time arrival in Sydney or Melbourne. Not sure how long it takes from there.
I agree it's nice to read about far flung places and dream. Articles on Utah or CA, the Great Divide or New Zealand's epic Ghost Road are appreciated!
You can defo get there and back cheaper. Lived in Hobart for 2 yrs, various routings including China Southern and the middle eastern trio, once the borders open again flight prices will come back down. Main cost saving is to book return to mainland and then a cheap onward ticket to TAS, give yourself a day or 2 in Mel or Syd on the way back to insure against a misconnect. You could precovid get there for £600 in ~28 hrs, although not at Christmas, it costs £1000 minimum to fly to Aus in their summer hols.
Derby is about 2 hrs pleasant forested drive from Launceston (Lon-sess-ton or lonnie). Just don't drive in the dark (your rental vehicle insurance won't cover damage from hitting wildlife).
I took a trip from Edinburgh to Tasmania (Launceston)3 years ago, if I remember flights with Emirates were only around £1100 and flight time was probably around 30 hours but I did have a very quick change in Dubai, luggage wise, I just put everything in my bike bag up to 30kg (I think I was a couple of KG over but Emirates were fine)
If anyone does think about going to Derby, I’d defiantly recommend the Blue Tier trail, it’s about a 45 minute uplift from Derby, it probably some of the best flow trails I’ve ever been on. Also, it’s also a worth a trip down to Hobart to take in Maydena bike park, it’s an uplift service with trails not to dissimilar to the likes of Revo or Innerleithen.
I enjoyed it that much that I hope to be going back once we get the all clear
Melbourne to Launceston is about a 30/45 minute flight
Bit of a spoiler for the international subscribers!🤔
Euans2 price above looks about right and that's a return ticket assuming we go back to normality and historical pricing maybe an issue on final leg with virgin Aus in doubt and no competition on internal flights....time wise can (could) fly Qantas London Perth refuel only Melbourne that's one plane 20hrs...dreamliner
Current exchange rate favours UK travellers just avoid the long school holidays Jan thru Feb
As to STW suitable usually plenty requests on here for Aus' holiday ideas.... as to Derby not that far from Bay of Fires Wine Glass bay and other good bits of coast so a good holiday destination
I went to Derby last December. It's a mindblowing place to ride (and I rode the new 40km Bay of Fires trail to the coast). Flights to Melbourne with bike were about £1200 iirc and 23hrs. Another $200 from Melbourne to Launceston (1hr) and then a 2hr drive. Definitely worth it (and it was an extended work trip to Melbourne so I wasn't paying). Though if you making the most of the journey I'd suggest going to Australia for 2-3 weeks minimum and doing a whole lot of riding. There are some new trails being made in Warburton, just outside Melbourne, that have great potential.
Was it you @corroded I took for a spin around South Hobart?
You should see it now.
And anyone else who does make it down to Tassie, make time for a couple of days in Hobart (all things considered, naturally). I'll be available to be a tour guide day or night.
