Whats the price difference? I'd go for SLX if budget allows, got them on my hardtail and really impressed with them.

Had both and currently using Deore and they're just fine. If the Deore are significantly cheaper I wouldn't hesitate going for them again but if the price difference is minimal then SLX if only for the tool free reach adjustment.

as above, both good, but unless very close get the deores. think they are £40 on crc at the min... which is ridiculous! some of the best brakes i've used...

as far as I know the only difference is the reach adjustment you may also get ice tech pads which strike me as a gimmick... I may be wrong though...

How useful do you find the tool free reach adjust? Isn't it something you set up to suit then leave alone, like lever angle?

I guess there's a bit more maintenance with pads wearing, but it's not like you need on the fly adjust like a dropper post or travel adjust, is it?

I've not adjusted the reach on my Deores in the last year. If you need to adjust, it's 10 secs with an Allen key. Tool free is just something else to snap.

I had 2 bikes, one XT brakes, one Deore. My new build has ........Deore. No braking performance difference, just a few grammes.

Happy with the Deores on my hardtail. They seem pretty powerful. Much better than I was expecting. (180mm front, 160 mm rear)

The Deores are simply fantastic for the money.

Not adjusted mine and zero issues in a year of use.

Having had the current Deore and XT brakes, I wouldn't buy anything other than the Deore next time.

Was looking at the SLX and Deore to replace my dodgy Elixir 5's, damn seized up again!!

Everywhere i read sayes they have easy to adjust cable length? but none say how? anyone know how? as the ones ive seen come in 1000mm and 1700mm which are about 200mm too long in both fronts!

^^
-remove pads.
-level the lever at the bar.
-pump the lever till the pistons are about 5mm out either side.
-pull the lever about 1/2 way to the bar and hold it in place with a rubber band.
-remove the top cap or if you have it screw the funnel in place with a little min. oil in there.
-undo the 8mm bolt connecting the hose to the lever and remove hose (may require a little brute force).
-cut the hose to required length keeping it as high as poss).
-thread new olive onto the hose.
-using the yellow blocks and molegrips to hold the hose securely, tap a new pin into the hose with a small hammer.
-whilst having someone push the pistons apart (forces any air out of the hose) push the hose back onto the lever body and tighten the 8mm bolt up till it is nice'n'tight.
-release the lever and flick it a few times (bubbles may appear in the funnel).
-top the reservoir if needed.
-replace pads and reservoir screw.

done-did.

Cables? There's bits supplied for cutting and reterminating the hoses.

loads of stuff out there. A lot about the XTs, as thery were first ones from the recent generation that got the rave reviews and were cheap enough to fly off the shelves. No difference to shortening the hoses on the Deores.
