I have a set of the Shimano Deore m590 s way shifters on mtb. It's 9 speed. For some reason the right hand shifter, bottom lever(to shift back down the cassette) when riding it doesn't engage, it jus runs seems to slide through without a shift, after a few presses it can sometimes find the shift eventually but yesterday the only way to get a shift was to move up the cassette with the other lever then back down and it seemed to wake up and work. I am thinking of trying to replace the inner and outer cables on this right hand side to see if any improvement but I am thinking the issue is internally inside the shifter works itself. I understand these are a nightmare to fix and it's easier to replace? Has anyone had or experienced this issue and is it worth swapping the cables out first and trying some Lube/oil etc on the shifter?
have a look inside, sometimes the ratchets get gunked up with old grease. blast it with 1/4 of a tin of gt85 or similar and work it, it SHOULD come back to life
Thanks for the advice, I have got it running again fine but everytime i go back to the bike it seems it doesn't engage initially when trying to shift? I will try and get a look inside but I think they are sealed aren't they and give it some gt85. Something not engaging which yes could be stuck. And releases after using and shifting up the gears.
I've had that with 9 speed Deore's. Try spraying some CRC or other penetrating oil inside. As above, the grease seems to dry out and gunk them up.
