read a review which said they were mince.

I like Shimano brakes generally and the m575s were side swappable, which'd be handy for me.

spotted one for 20 euro unused. should i?

I’m a big Shimano brake fan, but those ain’t great. They’re 5+ years old now and they weren’t great when new, but you know pull the lever and you’ll slow down, pull hard enough and you might when stop.

For €20 new they’d be a great pub bike brake

It's difficult to buy brakes, loads of people say standard deore is the go-to standard

Loads of people say sram levels..

One life's great mysteries I guess.

Got them on my cross trail and my wife’s bike. They’re ok. I’d never put them on anything that needed serious stopping power. Pretty reliable. The Kia Cee’d of brakes.

pull the lever and you’ll slow down

At least that's better than "pull the lever and it'll stick to the bar, rendering it useless", like the newer Shimanos!

575's were the turning point for Shimano's reputation of making reliable brakes, and being the go-to option. We had a lot returned for warranty replacement, mostly the now infamous "lever starts pulling to the bar no matter how many times it's bled". In fairness to Shimano, they were all replaced under warranty, in contrast to Avid, who returned every one we sent them with that same issue, with a lever that still came back to the bars, and a note saying they just needed bleeding.

Assuming you can still get them now the new deore m6000 range is out, i'd hunt fro some M615s. I've had 3 pairs for 4 years or so, faultless. Great brakes.

Have on one bike Deore BR-M447.

On two other bikes Deore M6000.

Brake action is good on both, the "feel" of the M6000 is better.

The M447 brake strangely "eats" brake pads. They are dirt cheap (normal Deore pads won't fit) but when you ride hard you have to swap brake pads quite often with the M447. M575 older version of the M447? Not sure.

I would look for a sale of the M6000 (right now, summer time, maybe no "sale" so?)

If you can find some M615s they are superb. Been on my son's bikes for about 3 years. I think I've bled them once.

i know just how good other deore brakes are thanks. i have some and have seen a few bargain sets too.

but that's mising the point. the reason i asked is because the m575 were flip-flop-able. it would be very handy for me to be able to swap lever sides so easily.

i'll probably go for a set of sram levels in the end then

My 525s are still grand. Has everyone started riding way faster than me with all the improvements in bikes?
