Just stripped the rear Deore M525 hub on my commuter due to it sounding terrible and one of the cones has cracked. The other one looks slightly worn but not too bad.
Struggling to find anywhere online to get replacements. Seems buying a complete axle or new hub is the easiest solution but looking at over 20 quid to do that.
Anyone know any cheaper sources or have any lying around that they'd sell for a few quid?
Cheers.
I ended up buying a complete Deore hub from wiggle or CRC last time due to price or avaliability of parts. I swapped everything over so the hub was like brand new. (knocked the disc side cup out and pressed in to the old hub so every bearing race was new).
You can get a drive side cone for £6.99, complete axle is £18.99, whole hub is £21 on Wiggle (new freehub as well, non drive side cup if you can swap it, and a hub shell paper weight)
Compared to swapping out cartridge bearings, they isn't so bad actually!
(I still prefer cartridges though...)
If the rim has life left in it just buy whole hub and swap it all inc the left hand cup as mentioned above. Heat helps with the cup in the hub shell
And bear in mind that freehubs don't last forever, so you'll have a spare for when yours dies too, and then it doesn't seem a bad price. I usually do mine this way, new freehub, bearings, and axle assembly all in one go, and the hubshell/wheel goes on forever.
Cheers chaps. Just ordered one from Chain Reaction. Extra 10% off so only cost £19 in the end.
Does the non drive side cup push out fairly easily?
