I don't really get the whole Shimano 12 speed thing.
It seems like more for more's sake, the parts cost more and loads of threads on here showing that it's very finicky for setting up.

Personally I like 10 speed. Robust, cheap and the cassettes and mechs now have a wide enough range. I still change a couple of cogs at once normally anyway...

Daft money. I was all set on getting a new bike early next year but having a look at the sky high prices, downgraded drivetrains and build kit, I'm just going to hang on to my current XT 11 speed equipped bike for another year at least. I don't want to be mugged.

Stock availability and prices in China are still the same during the last six months, £56 for an M6110 10-51t.

Any way that increase is to do with export/import taxes? Is there a chain of possession going from Malaysia, through the EU (getting stung with extra costs), to the UK, and the shops are simply just desperate to get any stock in to look after their loyal customers?

The GX cassette used to be under a £100 pre Brexit/Covid. Noticed there is stock in Europe now but at €165 when I looked still no uk stock.

It's true. I have 2x10 hardtail, bought it off the classified about 2008. Still on the same cassette and chainrings. 1 replacement chain. It's not done huge mileage, but had decent amount of use. Just keeps going.

Cheapest 11-46 11 speed I can find is 85 quid, so yer 12 speed one ain't that bad!

I don't think the price is that unreasonable given that you are getting 12 cogs so less than £8 per cog. My single speed cogs tend to cost around £20 (for one cog, obviously)

No, nor me. I was running XTR 11spd, but the cost thing pushed me into Deore 10spd for another build (with an old Saint shifter) and it's been good enough that I've bought a second set of everything to replace the worn XTR on the old bike. If I was buying a complete bike now, I'd look to get an XT 11spd equipped model myself I think. It's still solid kit. We've sourced parts to offer that on Cotic bikes (as an option not instead of 12spd... both are available).

Still managing most hills on my 10s 12-48 cassette from Sunrace. Sunrace MX mech working very well, shifting gets a bit fussy when chain is old could be the only real complaint.

12s seems to be for people much better at riding than me, who need smaller gaps to keep pushing a narrow cadence to speed up hills way faster than I ever could!

That's not too bad all things considered, yeah it's heavier than my XTR but it may well have to do for now.

I don't get all this Shimano 12spd is hard to set up / live with / finicky bollox, there's either a lot of ham-fisted people out there or they take their bikes to shops with "mechanics" who aren't actually much better! Mine hasn't skipped a beat in over 18months of use through some right shitty conditions including a some 12 & 6hr races, it may just be me, but the only gear based issues I've ever had have been down to bent hangers and shite routing.

You're not paying just for metal, you're paying for the work that goes into it (and the R&D) so clearly making 12 cogs is more effort than making 9.

While the name on the parts may well be a downgrade in reality it really isn't. I've got Deore 10 speed on one bike, XT 11 speed on another and SLX 12 speed on the third. The only difference in reality is the shifter and the weight. I've ridden demo bikes with Deore, SLX and XT in 12 speed and they were all massively impressive, especially the Deore.

Prices are a different thing though, so many things effect that. Don't forget there's no grey market spares currently as it's all going out at RRP or on complete bikes so you need to compare RRP over the generation to get a real picture.

Before all the Covid shortages really cut in I fitted deore 11 speed mech / Slx 11 speed shifter / Sunrace 11-50 cassette (I think - or may have been 11-46) / Sram chain to my nephew’s new bike and it cost very little for what you got. Chainring was a steel Sram direct mount for sub £20 too. Works really well (once I’d straightened the hanger on the brand new brand x frame) and seemed like a sweet spot for range vs price.

Not sure what they cost at the mo but Shimano 11 speed mechs work with 10 speed cassettes. Got one on my hardtail with a Saint shifter and 11-42 sunrace cassette, shifts lovely.

I'm looking for a Shimano 11-34 cassette for my Diverge - £105 and out of stock everywhere. Mine's got 3000 miles on it so I guess I'll just keep cleaning it and checking the chain wear. Maybe there's a certain logic to buying a complete bike, selling all the bits and frame and keeping the cassette.

I picked one up for £50 in Evans yesterday - CS-HG700-11 (105) 11-34.

It still is. I bought one a couple of months ago from Decathlon, it was £15. I bought an 8 speed for £12 as well.

What's extra frustrating is that the German sites seem to have stock but post brexit even if they still ship here import duty now makes them just as expensive

I have two 11 speed bikes because that's what they came with but the bike I built myself uses 10spd components rather like those mentioned above. I really can tell little difference. I certainly don't think, 'Gosh, I would love another cog' when on the 10spd. I honestly think the majority of people would be happy with 20 speed.

How does anyone type 10-51 with a straight face? If that’s the solution then think we’ve misunderstood the problem. I guess cost per tooth is a constant. And that’s a lot of teeth on the cassette.

New deore is pretty good I think. I’m running 11 speed on my mtb and recently got some new brakes that are ispec ev. Bought a deore 11 speed shifter with ispec ev mount and it is really nice. Also got the shimano dropper lever to match. Just ordered an 11-50 sunrace cassette. £76 delivered from bikeinn. No need for 12 cogs yet.

I'm pre-emptively buying 12 speed bits for my next build.

There was a number of new XT 12 speed cassettes on ebay for £90 recently, not bad I thought.

I don't think my GX 11 speed was much less in 2019.

Cheaper as they were the Rhythm Step side plate size(which I actually wanted, as I think it makes so much more sense) not the serving platter Eagle+1 size.

I as concerned about it being a potential fake but it wasn't, its spot on.

I think that 10-51 is exactly the answer when i started back mountain biking we had nine speed triples with a 11-34 cassette. That range has been eroded by 1x and this cassette gives the range and the same gears and both ends as that 9 speed system.
