i thought some of you may be interested in this.
this is my second build from Tom at Demon Frameworks. it's currently in its frame build stage but should be assembled prior to paint by the middle of next week.
some of it is overkill in it's design, that's deliberate, here's some pictures but i'll try not to completely give away the build idea as no one completely knows the aim of the build and it's about to be a show bike at NAHBS.

oh my, thats gonna look fantastic
Nothing useful to say but bookmarking this thread.
Looks awesome…
Shame it has to get painted...
thats lovely!
The things that I would do for one of Tom's frames horrify me - and you have two! Looking forward to seeing the whole thing. Will it be at the London show too?
I too agree don't paint it from what I can see its a thing of beauty!
"nothing useful to say" Brilliant!! 😆
to be honest i love metal finishes, Tom copper plated my Demon MTB, which at over a year on still looks good, and yes it is lacquered over the copper plating. the metal finish does look great, i decided i wanted paint on this one but that may change, for the show it will be in raw finish so show off the prep work that Tom does before paint, i have seen alot of his frames before they go to paint and regardless of the paint they all look like this underneath, it's very OCD for him but the customer gets this attention to detail which is awesome.

Were you at the Bontrager 24/12 last year? Saw a frame like that one^ and it stopped me in my tracks.
That really is lovely.
the mtb was at bespoked bristol last year, but i think i am right in thinking that Tom isn't showing at the Uk handmade show in London, but that is because i think he is judging. this bike will be first on display at the north american handmade show, unfortunately i'm not going with it having just been made redundant! (luckily this was already paid for!)
if you ever get the chance go to the US handmade show, it's amazing, i went last year and it was so good, better than any Uk show i have ever been to, 2 days wasn't enough.
These guys are based in Southampton aren't they? Near the station?
yep that was me at 24/12, did one lap on it, wasn't going too well at the time though having just come off a load of nightshifts and straight in to a 24hour race at last minutes notice! i preferred my full suss for the course though so used that for the rest of the ride, damn good course that was.
yep, right by southampton central station, phone in advance though as Tom works changeable hours.
his newer workshop is cool, way better than his old workshop, good space and light
Jesus wept that's gonna look the nuts 😯 😯
Ha ha!! Been watching this and your first MTB unfold on RB 😀
Utterly gorgeous. I adore the copper plate and would seriously consider stripping one of my hard tails to get that finish.
I'm intrigued by the rather chunky square stays on the MTB, how compliant are they?
Tom's (sometimes borderline unhealthy) attention to detail never fails to amaze me. That combined by his bold designs ideas makes for some of the best looking frames I have ever seen.
He's also one of the nicest guys you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting.
Oh and it's just Tom, he is Demon Frameworks!
Pure bike porn, well done sir.
Bookmarked for later
I really want one of those. Think I'd better start saving pennies...
Inspiring! I am about to order my first custom frame. Hopefully stainless. I am working at bespoked in London this year, can't wait!
thanks for the comments, nice to have a project appreciated 🙂
@slackalice, getting the copper plate to look like mine would be/is hard. the mtb is 853 tubing for the main triangle and 4130 cromo rear, with stainless headlug and drop outs, the whole frame was polished to almost mirror finish by hand by Tom, then copper plated, then polished again, then "roughed up" to give that finish you see, the plating doesn't stick to stainless and literally falls away during the polishing stage leaving the contrasting lug work, then it is lacquered. the square rear end is fine, when i first rode it i expected it to be uncomfortably stiff, is wasn't, i have done some pretty long rides on this bike and it's noticeably more comfortable than the bike which the geometry is based on (which i still have) which is also steel, a 2007 orange clockwork, that was my main bike for 5 years and i love it aswel but the Demon is 10mm longer in the top tube while retaining the same standover height, the extra 10mm in the top tube enabled me to use a 100mm stem while still having the perfect position, which gives me slightly better handling than the clockwork, with the clockwork they made 17" and a 19", ideally i need an 18" and the top tube length is perfectly between that of the 17 and 19, i had to run a slightly longer stem on the clockwork to get the length i wanted which wasn't ideal, if i had gone to the 19" i could have got the short stem but lost out on standover height, the Demon mtb fits perfectly in all aspects, and i'm sure this helps with it being comfortable.
@tang, stainless is a good choice, i assume you mean 953? or the newer 931 reynolds tubing? i looked at 953 myself instead of 853 at one point thinking ignorantly "i'll have the best one they do" but as i was painting the frame i was told 853 and 953 are basically the same apart from the stainless finish of 953 meaning if you're painting 953 is pretty unnecessary hence me not using it on this build. i'll be wondering around the london show aswel, probably on the friday, definitely the UK's best show. the cycleshow this here was abysmal.
Sweet! That's what a custom build is all about, refining the measurements and characteristics of an off-the-peg bike into one that fits perfectly and Tom has quite clearly understood your requirements to design and build in the compliance and handling you wanted. That's an art in itself!
So, sliding drop outs, big brakes, sexy Middleburn single ring… Which Alfine will it have?!! 😉
Loving the red and black combo too! 🙂
I spoke to Tom yesterday about an unrelated matter and he apologised for having a year long waiting list. I can see why.
Black cranks? I hope you're not a heel scuffer. I am so I have silver on all my bikes.
So what is it? Rigid singlespeed 29er?
Not sure yet, prob 953 as I want shiny finish, 931 is not in stock yet. My good friend Ted James and I are in talks! The money earned from bespoke and mayhem is paying for a frame. Support a UK builder and tube manufacturer! Light Ht 29r.
I think a few sweet touches, as you've done, that the builder excels at has to be included.
The grapevine has it that there will be an Alfine outback ....
@slackalice, yeah the fit is the most important thing and Tom gets that right
@mostly balanced, waiting lists are the norm with custom, the trick is to have 20 other bikes in the garage to choose from! 😉 i'm not generally a heel scuffer should should be good
@tang, Ted will build something nice, i like his stuff, like Tom he builds different from the norm, there are currently alot of newer builders on the scene and although their frames are great quality i don't feel they bring anything new to the table other than their own brand.
and yes, alfine rear end, which is a first for me. 😯
That's it, you've got it. Pushing ideas and coming from a serious riding background are important for me.
Shame it has to get painted.
A crime to paint it in my opinion. That really is very very nice.
My good god, that copper bike looks absolutely amazing. Absolutely. How can you bring yourself to ride it?
And the new one, truly a thing of beauty in the preview shots.
Wowsers - time to start saving!
Been following this on DMs FB page! Nice to see that it's going to get used properly
That's rather beautiful.
*wipes away dribble*
I love that crown design, really nice. Something with that included should be made available like Sachs or Pacenti lugs.
It could take off this custom building thing, especially when you consider some folks wait a year for a production frame and then can't have what they want.
@avdave2,
metal needs some kind of finish, when it's finished we'll see what it looks like and make the final decision from there.
@theflatboy,
cheers, you have to ride this stuff though
here's a few weeks ago:-
it was deeper than i thought!

rest assured it's in the garage now and it's clean and dry and lubed up! 😀
@ska-49,
bikes are defo for using!
@jameso, tom makes his own parts, i know there is talk of a collaboration between him and some american builders but nothing is definite yet. but i'd be surprised if he let any old builder use his parts.
@misinformer, true, some brands inadvertently make you wait, then you're just about to get your new bike and the new model is launched, but with a one year wait! 😐
really like the look of that ^^^ presumably hideously expensive, but looking is free 🙂
here is a link to the thread about the build of the mtb, the first post has a link to the full build thread on retrobike, but the photoshoot pics are in both threads, it was expensive but i worked alot of overtime to pay for it and spread it over a year.

This line from your earlier thread just made me chuckle o.p

yeah i did go a bit mad on spec and bling, but i figured i wouldn't be doing this again for a long time
I suppose a year is a long time in mountain biking 🙂
yeah, a year, i know, but i've just been made redundant so that'll put a hold on any future projects! luckily this was paid for in advance!
ok so i found a picture of the front end of the bike, it's been at the North American Handmade Bicycle show in Charlotte North Carolina. it's not finished yet though, we had decided to take it unpainted but due a to a personal issue Tom didn't manage to sort the internal cable routing in time, this will be done on it's return as will the paint.
oh and to answer questions of what it is, i wanted a street bruiser, i'm bored of road bikes and soem of the roads around here suck, it may also be used for commuting on bike paths which are also rough as hell! so we've used 29er geometry to have an MTB feel but to keep it practical it has an alfine 11 rear end and it's rigid, it will be capable of off road if needed as it can accept 2.1inch tyres if i so choose but it's aimed as a street bruiser.
anyway here's a pic, hope you like 😀 i'll get more when i can

oh, you tease! more photos?
unfortunately i could only find one at the moment!
That looks lush
that bike is pure kleenex and baby oil time!!
ok, i found some more pictures, the bike is still in america at the moment as Tom uses the show as an annual holiday aswel.
so this bike is basically an Urban 29er, i wanted something to replace my cyclocross bike and commute on if needed, i used to commute with the cross bike but i have got bored of drop bars, i didn't need another road bike (i have 4) as i'm bored of them aswel but i wanted something faster than a normal mtb for when i was out and about on the roads. so this is normal 29er geometry with clearance to take 2 inch tyres should i want to go off road.
the front head lug is called the "titan" and the forks is BMX inspired, it's mostly columbus tubing, and the rear end is square tubed with cnc drop outs front and rear.
it's not completely finished, there is a little more metal work to do and it needs paint or some other finish, undecided at the moment.
anyway, here's some pics! 😀
