Being dragged over there by my mates this Saturday & if i'm going all that way i expect some high quality golden fluids dribbling down my gizzard.
Where's the best alehouses in the town center?

The Maltings (next to Lendal Bridge) and the House of Trembling Madness (Stonegate) are both nice pubs and have some good real ales on, both very small though so tend to be very busy.

Other "proper" pubs I can think of off the top of my head are below, you could easily link these up as a couple are on the same street.

Stonegate:

The York Brewery
Ye Olde Stare Inne

Goodramgate:

The Old White Swan (Mucky Duck)

Kings Square, just round the corner from Goodramgate:

Last Drop Inn
Duke of York (opposite the Last Drop)

The Tap at the train station always has a very good selection of beverages.

As long as you avoid the big chain pubs you'll be right. We have LOADS of pubs to choose from.

Are the other posters on here also living in York?

Being rather flat I make it out for an evening or v.early morning ride at Dalby with another York pal every couple of weeks, but it would be great to put together a regular(ish) joint effort with some other riders.

The Phoenix inside the walls opposite the Barbican is nice- 4 ales on tap and coal fires. The Hop on Fossgate- great ales and good pizzas from their wood fired oven. Three Legged Mare on High Petergate. I'd avoid the Guy Fawkes unless you book a table for food- it's rammed at this time of year. Bar wise the City Screen bar is pricey but has great views.

I work most Saturdays 🙁

Just don't drink and go for a walk by the river - not a good success rate for that sort of thing recently.

Brigantes on Micklegate used to be a decent place but it's a few years since I was there. If your musical taste is of the goth persuasion there's a night on at the Fulford Arms I'll be off to.

The Hop definitely good ale, Duke Of York near by again good ale, Judges Lodgings Slug & lettuce of which there's two, depends on what type of night your after, there's always the slightly younger places Kennedys, Biltmore & if you venture of the bridge it gets very young & loud or am I just getting older ..... take you pick there's that many to choose from

SadexP- The Rudgate brewery's chocolate stout is pretty good - not too sweet, very chocolatey. Local to York so it's a possible. And I think the downstairs stone pub you describe is Lendal Cellars - other side of the river from The Maltings.

Walmgate Ale House for a quiet one - beer downstairs and bistro above.

Bluebell used to be a decent spun for ale on Walmgate too - just don't turn up in a gang.

What's The Judges Lodgings like these days. Used to be good beer.

York's full of good pubs actually.

And Wold Top Brewery seems to be run by cyclists (roadies really) if you want to both drink decent beer and support cycling (they sponsor some of the local sportives).

And Rudgate Brewery are a decent lot too. Gone mainstream now with their beer on Virgin East Coast.

And you can't ignore the York Brewery.

And being Yorkshire, about 400 other small breweries (according to the head Brewer at Wold Top).

Organic Orange - local to York, have car and bike rack, up for the occasional Dalby provided second rate riders are allowed. Email in profile.

+1 for Pivni.

Lendal Cellars is good in a 'slick' kind of way.

And a mate who knows these things loves The House of Trembling Madness...

i dont think thats the one mate. was in there a couple of weeks ago and im sure that was one of the two they had then. i havent got a very good sense of taste, love reading on the bottles about the 'burnt toffees, chocolate notes etc' but when i taste them, they all just taste of 'beer' 🙂 yet i either like em or dont.
the one i had 6 months or so ago had such a pronounced chocolate taste that even a beer ignoramus like me could taste it 😀

And I think the downstairs stone pub you describe is Lendal Cellars - other side of the river from The Maltings.

thats the one, thanks.

i love york 🙂

OO - Work in York but live just the other side of Dalby so there quite regularly. Would be interested in a few group rides, as long as you're not expecting race pace 🙂 email should be in profile.

Really spoilt for choice in super York, last time me and mrs went we pretty much just went in each one we came to next. Surprisingly I can't remember what any of them are called.

igm, Judges is OK all done up me & the missus go in summer upstairs sit out side & have some grub, down stairs it still surprisingly small inside but wainwright beer on tap & love the stuff.\
surprisingly Oscars has a good beer on too though the name escapes me.
Also there's the new ale house up High Peter gate which was the old restaurant Plunketts & very good ale plus the food was spot on too.

Hadn't realise Plunketts had gone. It had been there quite literally for years. Used to like it but I hadn't been there since before our eldest came along and he's 9 now.

The old Jessops in the the Swan Hotel appears to be another interesting looking place - looking at the taps through the window anyway.
