Decent non-boost 29er wheelset?

I have some Bontrager Line Elite wheels on my On One Maccatuskil. They're great. Light, fast, strong, and I got them for a bargain when Covid was in its infancy. Only problem is, the rear hub keeps developing a little play. Replacing the non-drive bearing fixes it for 100km or so before it returns.

So I'm on the lookout for something that would match the light, fast and strong (and bargain) criteria, but skip on the premature bearing wear criteria.

The Hunt XC wheels look good but no stock until January. I'm hovering over the buy button for the Superstar WTB i29 Essential wheels - for £95ish that's definitely a bargain, but 2.2kg and only 27 POE seems like a backward step...

Anything else I should be considering? It seems that non-boost wheels are hard to find now.

I've got a Giant Pxc front if you want it.

FoC. I've maybe got a rear, but can't be 100%

100*15?

I'd swap the hub personally if you like the rest of what the wheels do.

I hadn't actually considered that. I kinda assumed that the cost of a new hub and (probably) new spokes, plus a rebuild would make it not really worthwhile doing?
@weeksy thanks for that offer. Very kind. I think I'd prefer something new, just for peace of mind.

The superstar essential has the V3 hub. They have other wheelsets with the V6 hub for £119ish. Much more engagement and better bearings.

I have been eyeing up the element XC wheelset with the V6 hub - a bargain at that price.

Yeah the V6 looks much better, but seems to be in Boost sizes only 🙁

@ads678 - would need new spokes and rebuild, so total would be nearer £300 I think?

Nah, spokes maybe £30 and £50 for a wheel build.

I've just built a pair of wheels with those hubs for £300.

will fitwheels.eu build anything with a non boost DT swiss hub? My (boost) wheels have been great - I'd go back to them if I needed other nice wheels.

Maybe justridingalong have some options.

Anything with a hope hub as they are often changeable.

The Superstar V6/Isotope comes in non boost. £125 for the wheelset withh the 66% off offer. Bit lighter I think than 2.2kg, but not especially light.

I was looking at some non boost Mavic Crossmax for about 250 from crc. Weight, engagement etc were all good as was feedback on here.

I ended up with some dt swiss xm421's on bitex hubs, brand new never used but cheap on ebay

Well I went for the Isotope wheels, which arrived today. They're 2.1kg and probably a bit too OTT for my wee XC carbon hardtail, so reckon I'll sell them on (if anyone around central Scotland wants them for a bit of a discount on what I paid, let me know). Gone for those Crossmax's suggested by @dukeduvet. Went for the Microspline version, and then bought the HG freehub on ebay for £22, so saved a bit of cash and have a path towards 12-speed. 🙂

Cheers for all the suggestions!

If only I'd seen this a few days ago... Got a pair of DT Swiss X1450 (240 centrelock basically) 28h hubs built onto Pacenti TL28's with DT Super Comp spokes that are only a gnats chuff over 1500g including tapes and valves (were under without!) that I would have let go for a decent price, that I've had nothing to bolt them on for years...

Of course I now have a bike coming that I found cheap on Facebook classifieds that is going to house them!
