You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I've not done much riding the last couple of years, due to the obvious Covid kerfuffle plus a young daughter. Hoping to get back to more regular, longer rides as we're (hopefully) allowed out a bit more this year.
Trouble is I've put on a bit of pork, and developed some uncomfortable chafing even on short rides.
I used to ride 100 odd miles a week and have a gooch like leather; now I don't.
The obvious solution is to get less porky, which I'm working on, but it'd be nice to be comfortable while doing so.
I've tried a couple of saddles (Charge Spoon which has been my go-to for years, and an On-One Big Nose) with similar effects. But my decentish bibs don't sit too well on my new meaty frame, and the ten year old liners I have just ain't cutting the mustard.
So, what's a decent (but not silly expensive) pair of shorts for the man with thighs like wobbly tree trunks? Are DHB still recommended?
Cheers in advance 🙂
Decathlon
Minty arse lard too??
Bum butter helps, but only to a point. I'll have a look at Decathlon, hadn't thought of them, cheers!
I always used to swear by DHB shorts but I now find them not padded right. Still better than Endura click fast liners though. Decathlon always seem to get decent reviews for own brand shorts so worth a look.
Personally for mtb I’m now using DHB Aeron waist shorts and they’re great - but they’re double the price of the cheaper ones.
Also quite liking Endura fs-260 bibs - but again they’re not budget (mid range I think - you seem to be able to spend a vast amount of money on bib shorts).
See it's tricky isn't it, I don't mind paying midrange Endura prices, but not if they're not gonna make any difference. Reckon I might try some of the middle of the range Decathlon bibs and see how I go.
Pad on https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CLPXP3BS/planet-x-pro-line-365x-bib-shorts isn't bad, but I find the upper material not very breathable unless I'm staying sub ~200W and the sizing by waist is a bit generous.
Bought a pair of https://www.merlincycles.com/six2-slp-luxury-bib-shorts-194176.html recently, going on turbo rides the pad is very good and they have a breathable back.

Id agree with that.👍
Ended up with a pair of the Six2 bibs from Merlin as posted above, mainly because they have 'luxury' in the name, and who doesn't love that?
First impressions were really good - they feel premium, really nice material with a decent wide pad, and fit pretty well.
After a couple of hours hacking round the woods this morning I can confirm that they're very comfortable indeed, with almost no chafing whatsoever. Might swap back to my original saddle next ride.
I've been really impressed with the alpkit bib shorts I've been using, about £50

So good I bought a 2nd pair in the sale.
Plus they have a great warranty and repair service.
Didn't even realise Alpkit did bibs. Might have a look at those next time.
My current go to bib shorts are Decathlon as well. Just done 4 hours on and off road on my cx and it's alles in ordnung.
DHB is hard to beat for decent kit on a budget.
I've gone from padded shorts to just lycra runners shorts under my riding shorts.
I feel like the padding created issues rather than helped.
Seems to be better so far.
Thin lycra running 3/4 length shorts, then regular mtb shorts on top and lashings of chamois cream.
