My formula Oros have finally given up on life after 7 years and there's almost too much choice of brkes for under £200 for a pair front and rear. I still have the mount adaptors and overkill 203/180 discs from the oros so just need the brakes themselves. Digging around I've narrowed it down to this choice:
Hope tech evo x2, most expensive at just under £200 but had very good service from Hope, haven't used hope since and old set of mono minis I didn't get along with too well.
Shimano XTs from Rose, will need to swap over levers but I imagine that's not too difficult, seem to be the STW brake of choice.
Formula RX 2012, seem a bit of a bargain at £150 a pair. R1s can be had for just over £250 but may be too fragile.
I imagine some has faced the same choice, any opinions?
Cheers.
.
Deore, Tweeks, £100, buy some rotors and adaptors for another £30
I replaced 203/180 Hope M4's on my hardtail with RX 180/160's. The RX's took slightly longer to set up, and they are a bit more fiddly to bleed, but there was a noticeable improvement in braking performance.
Budget? shimano has to be the choice. it terms of performance to £ its hard to see beyond - unless like me you would prefer second hand hopes to new shimano
i have avid elixir 5's on my covert and my dh bike, 2012's here for 140 they have been faultless. Mucho power and v reliable.
Thanks for the input guys, budget is under £200 excluding rotors and adaptors, obviously cheaper is better. From ressarch the RX can be had for just under £150, the XTs for around £140 and the Hopes on Merlin are just under £200.
I got XT & they're awsome & with the Facebook discount paid £125!! Steal!!
I got Formula Mega 2010 F&R with rotors for £150 or £170 posted (can't remember which) off the Formula website recently.
They are a more basic version of The Ones.
There are a lot of very good deals out there! The megas I saw but not sure if the RXs aren't the better option for roughly the same price.
How do you go about getting the FaceBook discount and can you switch the levers on the Shimano brakes without needing a bleed (and while being a bit cack handed!)?
