Need a back tyre for my 26" Five - all the usual moon-on-a-stick requirements like not too heavy, reasonably good roller and tough. Had a Black Chilli 2.2 Rubber Queen which was pretty good but they're £50 each as far as I can tell. Just been using a Mountain King and it's crap - punctures literally every ride, despite its so-called 'Protection' walls. UST would be ideal, but not if it means shelling out sh*t-loads. I ride a lot of rocks, usually wet ones, but I also like doing 30-mile rides, so DH tyres are out. Any good deals about? Cheers.

I don't know of any reasonably sticky tyre which will give you more miles per £ than a black chili Rubber Queen / Trail King with the stronger sidewalls. Are you running the Mountain King tubeless?

Specialized Purgatory fits the bill well

I'd have a look at what Specialized have since they seem good value. I have Purgatory on my rear (and front for that matter) and I've no complaints so far except when it's very wet and muddy. They mount tubeless very easily too. That said, I'm no tyre aficionado and just went with these from a recommendation from someone on here who rides where I ride (SW Peak District - rocky).

Ran the Mountain King tubeless and it flatted within about 30 seconds of my first rocky descent, half a mile into a ride. Stuck a tube in and its flatted on all three rides since. Not even as if I was riding in the Lakes. I guess the tyre doesn't need to be quite so grippy as a Black Chilli. If I was going Maxxis, I'd have a 60a compound, not Super Tacky.

Maybe you need to brush up on your skillz instead of just smashing into everything? 😡

Conti Baron, £12, bit weighty but when the summer comes and you switch to something lighter and quicker you'll be flying!

Specialized best value out there these days IMO- well designed tyres made by maxxis (or rather, both made by CST) for half what they'd cost if they said Maxxis on. Love my Butchers.

Wouldn't touch a cheap conti with a 10 foot pole, myself, they're made of bakalite.

Cheers for these. Might try a Baron if it's not too hefty.

Onza Ibex 2.25FR. Goes up tubeless, light, tough sidewalls. Cheap too.
