Dear Specialized,

If you are going to fit your bikes with OEM products, keep spares. Then when we need to repair said OEM products, be they hubs (especially hubs)or other parts we will be able to. This will reduce the necessisty of having to tell a customer that their wheel, which requires a new axle only, is now useless and they need a new wheel.

Thank You.

I would send them this, in a letter, to UK head office. Might get something out of them.

Their BB91 adapters was worse: 'yes sir, I know it's just 2 bearings, but I'm afraid you can't use your £4000 bike for 9 months while they get stock. New chainset you say? No, they don't import the cranks, so you really have no alternative. Can I sell you a Trek to tide you over?' 🙄

Shame really, but it is an issue with so many proprietary parts.

Aaaarrrggghhhhh! Don't say that.
When they warrantied my frame & replaced it with the carbon one, my main concern was the press-fit BB over a normal HTII.
I understand it's not even a standard one, but has a 'Specialized' specific bit to it??
Do you reckon it's worth ordering one & keeping it by for replacement, rather than waiting until the current one is shafted??

Yes, seeing as it will need replacing at some point.

Yep, definitely. The problem was when they Initially did the frames, I dont think it's an issue now, but it was absurd! It is completely unique as you say.

Yep, definitely.

Hmmmmm! When you put it like that....

What advantage can there be to making something that is so specific? There is a standard press-fit BB standard isn't there? So who at Specialized decided theirs had to be a little bit different!?

And I can't see me forking out for the expensive tools to do the change, so it will probably by an LBS job from now on. Unless there is an easy & reliable bodge that won't cause me to ruin my frame!!

presumably so you spend the life of the frame (which is what, 5 or 10 bbs on average?) buying their bbs and cranks rather than shimano\sram\hope\whatever

Usually patent or royalty avoidance.

Hi,

We have these bottom brackets in stock and have done for some time. Unfortunately the back up from the Shimano importer Madison who said they would have stock since we informed them our bikes would be supplied with these bottom brackets hasn't come to fruit and now is expected sometime next month which has let a lot of Non Specialized dealers down, however there are alternative's out there such as KCNC bottom brackets. Your dealer can order a Shimano BB through ourselves.
If you could forward any links to forum threads I would be thankful.

Many thanks

Hi, firstly, my bottom bracket has given up the ghost and i require to fit another one of the model (subject) above. Secondly, Why oh why oh why, would anyone , never mind a huge company like Specialized, decide to build a bike that requires a part that is as commonly needed as the BB, and not supply it to any shops so i cant get a replacement without going through the company. Totally unacceptable to me. So, can you help me find this bottom bracket and let me know how i pay for it and get it sent to me. This is also becoming a widely laughable subject on many internet bike forums ( bikeradar, singletrackworld etc ) and i feel specialized need to react towards this quickly. This would definatley put me off buying another specialized bike again if this wasn't resolved

When I broke a spoke in my Traversees, my local Specialized dealer phoned up Specialized and they said "Send the wheel back to Specialized HQ in America". Genius.

Not actually enforceable in any court, of law, kangaroo or other variety, as you would have to sign to indicate your acceptance of it.

I've had this with Trek when I bought a £3300 Rumblefish 29er. THey'd fitted a 19" 29er with an RP23BV shock with 'low velocity tune' which wouldn't let me get less than 40% sag. I contacted Mojo who advised me it should be a medium to high at least, I took it to Trek UK who said that they where all like that........OE building at it's best.

The bike was unrideable to me, mainly because I'm 17.5 stone (and getting lighter), the Cube Stereo I bought didn't suffer the same problem and after selling the Rumblefish to someone a lot lighter than me I bought a Lapierre Zesty 514 which had a shock with High Velocity tune and is perfect, because they fit the correct shock to the correct frame size, 21.5" frames are rarely ridden by 10st people.

Spesh, Trek, Giant, Scott etc (All American brands by perchance??) have taken manufacturing economies of scale down to a dime, which unfortunately means customer service is thinned out too.

I'd never buy another one.

You think thats bad, you want to try being a Cannondale supporter for nearly 15 years.

4 bolt hubs
Just over 1.5" headtube
lefty wheels
Coda brakes
several different suppliers of freewheel for their own hubs
24 spoke wheels (try getting a new rim)

I could go on, still got four of them in the garage though 😀

it's much like speshes custom shocks for the stumpjumper, previous versions have non standard i2i and stroke, that wasn't enought though now your tied in with totally unique shock. No chance of using an off the shelf item. Will never buy a spesh again it's too much of a ballache.

to be fair, weren't cannondale using 1.5ish headtubes way before the rest of the mtb market got anywhere near them?
