So I recently got an MIAS guiding qualification. Whoop.
At the moment I am not intending setting up a company but just sort of 'making myself available'!
So I looked up DBS checking. It appears I can only request the most basic check on myself. If I want the more advanced checks which realistically are what people really need I need to get another company to do that.
Could I just request perhaps my LBS to request it and I pay them?
And then could I still request myself for the renewal service for that advanced check?
Or do I just get the basic check myself and just say I am DBS checked!
Or do I just get the basic check myself and just say I am DBS checked
I imagine that's what almost anyone shy of a school or similar does to be honest. An LBS requesting am enhanced DBS would, I'd like to think, raise a few questions and a curt "no".
Setup a company anyhow, costs nowt, request it via the company.
Edit
Seems you can't request one as an individual anyhow, even a basic.
Your lbs won't hit the 100pa threshold for a standard check anyhow so it's an umbrella organisation job in any event. Enhanced looks to only be available if you're in a nominated role but that maybe how I'm reading it (eg it might be anyone can but nominated roles have to)
Have a look here:

You can. I had to get myself a basic one the other week for a customer at work (prior to BPSS application). Went on the Gov website, filled it out, had a certificate about 10 minutes later, emailed over to customer. Claimed the cost back from my employer.
I think you need to take a step back and think about (a) what you are planning on doing (b) what purpose the DBS serves in that process (c) how someone in similar position to yourself who was looking to do something nefarious might circumvent any kind of "DIY" DBS option.
Are you planning to take <18s?
Are you planning to take them without parents?
Does this fall within the scope of AALA?
Are you planning to take 1:1 sessions with people who might feel vulnerable with a guide on their own?
If you did have a certificate what would you do with it? Post it on your website? I cant remember if they contain personal data but I assume they do so its clearly linked to YOU.
If your clientele have safeguarding concerns - how would they raise them with a "1 man band" guide organisation? Accreditation with a governing body is more likely to offer some benefits like that. Do MIAS offer that? If not then perhaps BC do - but you probably need to do some of their training too!
Assuming you get a "clean" DBS certificate today and then next month get caught doing something dodgy, how would a parent or other person know that you were no longer still "OK"? When a governing body or organisation submits DBS checks they get alerted if their people then get the status removed, and then they can tackle the risks involved. If you DIY at best you would be told, but if you were dodgy you likely wouldn't tell anyone else. If a "shop" or some other organisation that had no management control over you submitted it they would have no way to proactively manage the revocation out to ad hoc guides.
Just get a PVG from Scotland. Different process, valid anywhere. Much more sensible.
Sort of echoing Poly - whats the purpose of the DBS, and if you NEED one, are you then open to having to write / acquire safeguarding policies etc? (not that I know)
DBS is to some degree silly anyhow, it happens quite frequently in the NHS that paedophiles are found and sacked and the DBS showed nothing.
moab,
Is that right? Disclose Scotland says implies its not the case - although they don't explicitly state they will reject any personal applicant from south of the border.

As far as I understand it, PVG is for a particular club/group/organisation. If I wanted to coach at another bike club, they'd have to get a PVG check done on me as the one I have with my current club isn't valid for the other club.
I also know of 2 other coaches who left a club and went to join another club and needed PVG checks done - 1 was fine with that and it was all done, the other one refused as he argued he already had 1 (from previous club), but that was refused so he doesn't coach.

@poly thanks for all that. Interesting.
I suppose I just assumed it was one of those things that had to be done.
Still not quite sure what I intend to do with it. But not a career! Perhaps make myself available to shops as a guide for demos or such like . Perhaps make myself available in the local areas when people ask 'where can I ride'
All a bit airy fairy at the moment I know !
How about joining a local bike club (or more) and seeing what you could offer? Coaching or guiding, I suspect clubs would be interested as it probably encourages more people out riding. The club could do the checks on you and would allow you to use your skills...
Is there a local guiding company who may be interested in having you as a freelancer on their books?
