Saw that at the weekend at the gravity enduro, funnily enough- fastest hardtail and top 40 in seniors to boot. Instantly recognisable as a Dialled, always nice that.

Still 16" and 18" but with slightly longer top tubes and lower BB, plus the bigger head tube and seat tube that seem all the rage these days.

Not much else has changed as I didn't think it needed to change much.

25mm bb drop gives a 12" bb height on a sagged 140mm fork.

Older thread with some pics and details

Quote from the Dialled Site a few months ago...

No massive, just a few subtle changes to keep it current. So in comes an XX44 Reynolds 631 head tube, a seat tube compatible with a 31.6mm dropper post, ISCG05 and 0.75? longer top tubes on the 16? and 18?models.

Throw in the lower bottom bracket and it's looking very interesting for me... but want to see final details.

Mike gave me the following info in an email a few weeks ago.

Full price will be £500. Pre-order price, £400. Deposit £200. Delivery around the end of August.

Mike - Please design one with 29er wheels in a slightly bigger size, maybe 19" seat tube, 450mm reach, short chainstays etc.... My old Alpine was still one of my favourite bikes, despite being too small for me.

How does the old ride compared to the new? I had one of the original grey ones from Mike a few years ago- I didn't quite get on with it but loved a Chameleon.

Mike actually sold a frame to Hora? I thought he said he would never sell him one due to the inevitable bothering/questions/why does my bum hurt/new frame not confident on steep stuff what gives? Angst that usually follows.
Maybe he said that afterwards? 🙄

I think that might have been afterwards, or Hora might have got it second hand.

I could completely understand anyone not wanting to sell anything to him, as he's a total time waster and the embodiment of the internet *expert*

Correction - the seat post size is 30.9mm, not 31.6mm. Still dropper compatible.

68 degree head angle (on sagged 140mm fork), 74 degree seat angle. No big departure from the original Alpines, just a bit roomier in the top tube and tad lower BB as those were the only criticisms levelled at previous versions. I didn't want to change stuff for the sake of it.

Graphics on the production frame will also be different as the reflective panel sticker gets a mixed reception. The brushed aluminium ones I use on my other company's frames (Factory Team Bikes) would probably go well with the Alpine's raw look.

Hora, it rides well! It has the same nimble, chuckable back triangle, but the slightly longer top tube means it holds that bit more stable when its flat out, that with the 160's is a force to be reckoned with! New touch lower BB, corners beautifully!

Unfortunately, probably not gonna go with the raw/lacquered finish for production as one of the finish on one of the test frames hasn't held up as well as the others. It may just be a one off, but I'd rather go with a tried and tested powder coat colour for this next batch and then re-assess the finishes on the other test frames at the time it comes to re-order the next batch.

I think the Alpine would look good in white. Any suggestions?

I think white would work.

I also like the kwakker green, but it's obviously been done a few times now.

Shame about the raw finish, the images of it looked lovely but understandable that you want to avoid issues.

I thought the original purple was good and a deep, egg yolk yelow (seen some images of a custom one I think) would also be nice.

Seen nice shots of it in white which do look OK but not my choice.

Probably the best angled steel framed hard tail in the UK, only Chromag matches the angles across the pond ! But much much more expensive!!

Shame, but white would look pretty good, not a fan of that purple or green, or garish colours full stop. 'stealth' as opposed to 'accountant' black would also be fine 😉

i loved* the translucent red of my MKII Alpine frame, and the ride to be fair.

raw is ok, but i would want to etch the welds rather than proper 'raw'

*I had my heart set on a PA tho, so the Classic was too good to miss. I hope the lad that bought the Alpine frame from me is having as much fun with it as i did.

British Racing Green?

Or many moons ago Spec did a Stumpy in a matt green which I always loved the look of.

But... colour is one of my least important considerations 8)

I'm in the process of building up a MK1 for the summer. Once it is finished it will be my first ride in 2 years. To say i'm looking forward to it is a mild understatement.

If I love it, tempted to order a MK3 straight away and start another build, donating the MK1 build to mrs peterfile 🙂

Choosing colours is doing my head in, as I was dead set on the raw/polished/clear coat.

Still thinking white (as the subtle option) and fluorescent green (as the bolder option - similar to Kwak green but brighter).

I think simple black stickers would go well with either colour, but may opt for the brushed alloy ones like I use on my other brand's frames, but in a different style/font: http://factoryteambikes.com/Factory_Team_Bikes/Pro_XXL.html

black stickers on a bright frame would look good, not sure about silver stickers on a bright coloured frame as won't they get overwhelmed?

When are you putting the pre-order link up on your site?

I'm not sure about the white, it looks ok on the smaller holeshot frame but I don't think it compares to the green

[img] [/img]

I really like the metallic grey used on the mk1 Alpines but if you want something bright I think the orange used for the PAs would go well, either that or purple

Loads of Dialled Bikes frames already out there in orange and that green. Time to give those colours a rest and come up with something new.

The metallic coffee of the PA29 prototype is really nice, but I don't think it would suit the Alpine.

Maybe I should just supply the frames raw, supply with a sticker set, and let people get them sprayed up themselves?

Pre-order link will hopefully be up on the site in about a week. Hopefully, I will have a completely new Dialled Bikes website within a week!

Why not two-layer the lacquer on the raw and mention it will change hue with age?

The coffee, was it like the old Santa Cruz Rootbeer? Mine was stunning. Still fresh IMO.

Never mind "rootbeer" do a "beer" coloured bike... although it might turn out "beige"...

Would add a lot to the price of the frame if you had to factor in a respray!

My GF had a Giant Cypher which was a nice flat matt gold (anodised as it was an Al frame) which looked 8)

Please don't go for white, everything is white these days and I think used tastefully (saddles, maybe bashguards, occasionally rims, coughmybikecough) it looks good but whole frames start looking awful when they're covered in crud/chipped.

A polished/nickel finish would go down well I think.

I'm not sure I follow your logic here.

White frames look awful when covered in crud and chipped, but white saddles/bashguards/rims look OK when covered in crud and chipped?

I would have said the opposite, the parts you just listed (white plastic and leather in particular) start looking tired on my bikes long before the frame does.

White is a fashion-colour though. Its had alot of popularity but alot of brands are moving away from it?

My Meta5 is white. Its nice but I'd prefer a loud colour.

true. i'm a tart though 🙂 can't say i've ever owned a frame long enough for it to start looking tatty!

I quite like white frames for building up, gives more flexibility to change stuff around.

white and grey as so ****ing dull though.

They are popular colours as they have been picked by accountants as the least offensive bland colour that won't upset anyone as they are always considered to be 'OK'

Why settle for 'OK' and middle of the road; why not go for something that is GOOD or even interesting rather the same old, same old.

RichC - If I went down the route of DIY paint jobs I know a very reasonably priced (and good) paintshop which does a lot of our team frames. £40 per frame, plus postage. So I would try to strike a deal for customers with them.

Hora - yes, like that but a bit darker and nicer. Don't think it would suit the Alpine though.

Why settle for 'OK' and middle of the road; why not go for something that is GOOD or even interesting rather the same old, same old.

Surely the reason is because what colours are "GOOD" varies massively from person to person?

Make your new frame a bold colour and you run the risk of people not buying it because they think it looks rank. White/grey/black etc isn't as divisive.

I'd bet if you did a poll which said "would you buy a white frame" there would be fewer "no" responses than if you asked "would you buy a [insert bold colour here] frame".

Sure, it's boring, but they're trying to sell bikes, not satisfy a small percentage of the population's desire for owning a neon pink bike.

It costs relatively little to have a frame sprayed, so why not just do it yourself if you've got a fancy for a non conventional colour which never seems to be used on frames? In that case it's even better if no one mass produces a frame in your colour, since it makes your own bike even more unique.

Personally I'd love the opportunity to get hold of an unpainted frame and get it painted the colour of my choosing! Or even better, strike that deal with your local sprayer and we'll just send you the RAL numbers with our orders!

And that's why everything is starting to look like the same, as safe and dull go hand in hand, as too many people are happy to follow the herd rather than get some imagination.

Custom colours like Mike is suggesting for a small up extra cost would be good though especially if he could send them direct to the power coaters who would then send them onto customers, as that's the PITA part I/customer wouldn't like, as if you have a job, dropping a frame off and picking it up when you work 9-5 (or 8-7 🙁 ) can be difficult.

Also that would be a pretty unique selling point, and that way everyone is happy, as people with some imagination can have interesting colours, and the accountants/IT middle managers can get their frames sprayed beige or magnolia

I think that would be absolutely brilliant - a real selling point for Dialled.

Update the website so that you can view the frame in the colours available and you've got yourself one heck of a selling tool!
