Hi All,
need of a little advice from STW boffins... just got a CX'r but its not mountain friendly in terms of its gearing, at least not for a mere mortal like me + a trailer 😉
Its got hooded 105 shifters on a 2x8 setup, and a really shortcage rear 105 mech.... was wondering how i could get it to a more MTB XTR setup, as i have a XTR shadow rear mech and FSA triple crank & BB spare with 9 speed SRAM cassette -
rear:
the 9 speed cassette will replace the 8 speed at present and mated to the 9 speed XTR shadow rear mech,
the problem i think is the 105 shifter, will the 8 speed work with 9? if not, what will work with 9?
i know a 105 10 speed will work with a 9 speed XTR, but that would mean i would have to buy a 10 speed cassette...and of course a new chain!
front:
the same goes for changing the 105 front, to triple, wondering if i need a new 105 hood shifter and front mech too... or could/would the 105 front mech be coaxed into shifting 3 rings?
I guess the easier thing to do might be to do 1 or the other, change the rear to 10speed and leave upfront to 2, or change upfront to 3 and leave the rear at 8.... but any ANY suggestions welcome 🙂
thanks in advance!
Well I have a new-ish 9sp KMC chain and some Ultegra 9 speed STI shifters for sale. Left shifter is for a double though.
As for gearing my commuter has a 39 big ring (no front mech so chain is constantly on the big ring) and a 12-28 cassette and I never had any problems with any hills in Edinburgh. Just put a smaller big ring instead of the 53 and that combined with a mtb cassette should sort the gearing problem.
9speed road shifter will work with a 9sp setup no problem, front double STI and a triple chainset will probably not work (however there are 4 clicks in the left STI).
Thanks mieszko,
so i guess i can get away with just buying a 9 speed sti shifter and plonk on my 9 speed mtb cassette and xtr mech, job done for the rear,
up front - not sure 2 up front would be that great with a 10kg trailer --- even with a really small ring setup, its sounding more and more like i would need a new shifter and a new front mech, for my MTB cranks and rings...
although more research on the interwebby sometimes states front shifters are 'double/triple' , 105 ultegra etc etc, but i cannot find out how you would know just looking at the shifter!
Consider bar end shifters.
I'm sticking them on my trail/non race crosser. My thinking was that I didn't need to make so many changes on the trail. And like you I'm running XT on the back, though just two up front.
There was a gadget i saw that allows you to change the rears on the top fo the Hoods, with a little dinky changer - thats what i'll be going for to match the brakes on there too. cannot find the link due to not having fav's on this computer.
anyone know how you can identify if a road shifter is double/triple compatible - interweby aint giving me any joy....
