Whats a compact chainset?
Is a medium cage rear mech needed for a triple chainset?
Would a medium cage rear mech be needed for a 27-11 tooth cassette?

A compact chainset has a smaller than usual BCD (110). Usually the chainrings are 50 34.
I would think a medium cage mech would be preferable, especially if you are using 50 34 rings too.

Compact is a double chainset with smaller rings.
Medium GS mechs are for triple.
You can use the newer shimano short cage mechs up to 28 on the rear.
