Looking for some roadie advice.
Have bought a cheap 2nd hand road bike for my youngest girl to use on the turbo.
The turbo runs a 10 speed Shimano cassette (as does my road bike - ahem).
So, the little bike is a Halfords 14 speed Shimano TdF LTD. Nice bike actually.
For this bike, I have, in the parts bin, a 10 speed rear mech, 10 speed road cassette, 10 speed chain and a pair of 10 speed Tiagra shifters.
What do I need up front to take the rest of the bike from current 14 speed to 20 speed, if anything?
Want to keep a 2x.
Whilst the Halfords bike is surprisingly lovely, it has a square taper BB.
So two questions:
1) Can I keep the current crankset (square taper)? If not, what should I get, keeping the costs right down?
2) Do I need a new front mech?
Not a roadie (honest), so advice welcome.
There may be issues with a 10sp chain not working with your chainrings very well, they may be a tad thick and cause chainsuck, i'd probably try them though. Another issue is 10sp Tiagra shifters need either 10sp Tiagra mechs, or 11sp Shimano mechs as they have a unique pull ratio for 10sp's.
The tiagra mech compatibility depends on which age shifters you have , they have a part number under the hood so you can check.
As above I’d try the chainset and front mech first before spending money.
And also check the rear wheel will take the 10 speed cassette as it may be 7 speed screw on freewheel.
Is rear mech you have a road 10 speed one or mtb
Thanks all, much appreciated.
They are relatively old Tiagra 10 speed shifters (4600).
I'm guessing that this will work with almost equally old (6600) Ultegra 10 speed mech I have.
Rear wheel not a problem as that is completely knackered, and part of the reason I got the bike so cheap. It'll purely be for turbo use to start with, and if little'un likes it, I'll get her a new wheel.
