BM'd for a more appropriate time 😆
Incredible riding, but I found myself thinking that riding a bike seemed a bit trivial compared to the story/scenery and the commercialism jarred against the bloke at the beginning (especially the cringeworthy drinking a can of red bull bit).
Well done on posting a link to this, had missed another Danny Mac film being released.
As always, hypnotic to watch his riding skills and really nicely edited.
What an apocalyptic landscape - tragic.
Drinking from a red bull can - he's sold his soul 🙂
Whilst his riding cannot be faulted, I thought it was a bit of a depressing backdrop. The drinking Red Bull bit made it feel like a really crass piece of product placement. I know Red Bull pay for it etc, but that shot was almost a turn-off moment.
Yes but his bike isn't orange any more.
and he'd benefit from a dropper post surely...
Jaw dropping
They pay his wages - what do you guys do for your companies?
Great stuff, it's too easy to take what he can do for granted, given that he makes it look so effortless.
Here's a short film on Pablo, the only resident of Epecuen.
sigh.... what tyres for riding recently submerged cities?
There's always one 'blow out your cheeks, blink twice' move and I was waiting to see what it was. Definitely the front flip over the sign with the front wheel tap - outrageous.
I liked it more than the toy one, that felt a little gimmicky.
Re: juxtaposition of landscape vs. redbull drinking, if 2 seconds of cringe allow for the rest of the video, then I think that's fair.
Though I must say, I don't know the history, but I'd feel uncomfortable if people had died there and he was riding through there homes. Does anyone know if it was evacuated fully?
Everyone got out, the waters rose pretty slowly to a level of 10m, due to a combination of freak weather, a dam failure followed by a dyke failure....
Nobody minds RedBull paying him and advertising on his helmet...
it's the 'drinking a can in a video' that's bad judgement.
I though the manual along the wall hopping up onto the pillars was the best bit.
the more i see of Mr MacAskill, the more umimpressed i am by him.
he's certainly not a one trick pony, but i feel all his films are a little samey. his first Edinburgh film was properly WOW, but since then they are all much of a much-ness.
would like to see him riding natural trails with his trials flair, much like Akrigg.
i don't think that Danny is that creative with his riding. whether that is his doing or the film makers, i don't know (or particularly care).
and i find lots of these "hey this is an amazing location. lets ride our 3k bikes through this 3rd world village" rather gaudy and decadent.
prefer this:
more creative, more honest. just better.
I'd beg to differ. I wouldn't want to get into a debate on whether Danny is "better" than Chris. That seems rather pointless and each to their own. But I think what Danny does is starting to go beyond just doing tricks on a bike and (as I rather clumsily put it earlier) starts to look like a work of art to me.
Yes there is a juxtaposition of corporate sponsorship, fancy bikes and slick cinematography with the desolation of the scene, but that's kind of the point. The purpose of art is to make the observer think and I think what Danny does makes us go beyond "look at those cool tricks" and start to question things a bit more. I like that. After all, who'd even heard of Epecuen before watching that film?
Right, that's enough from me. I'm back off to Radio 4, where I belong 🙂
I happened to watch The Worlds Weirdest Weather on C4 last night and they showed how Epecuen was flooded (from 18:06 for anyone interested)!
There wasn't any Enduroing in it.
It needed more enduro.....on an enduro rig.
Aside from that obvious flaw, his riding is utterly amazing and as jaw dropping as ever.
Personally though, I still far prefer the rawness and energy of his street edit that shot him to most folks attention originally.
Good work Danny 🙂
Loved it. They should cut out the atmosphere shots and just do the Danny stuff though.
what tyres for riding recently submerged cities?
They looked to be Continentals, hope this helps 😀
I enjoyed that, his films are becoming more mature and that suits my sensibilities 😆
Cool film. Agree about his stuff getting more 'arty' but in terms of riding isn't it just (devil's advocate) Akrigg's Through The Mill with a bigger budget?
Having said that, the front flip tyre tap looks VERY cool.
His attitude is right too (in terms of PR and media exposure). Watched the Google Hangouts interview earlier and he was taking about the manual hop sequence along the wall with pillars. 5 hours and all wasn't happy as they had to use a shoot where he took a tiny second hop on the second pillar - didn't like how it made it awkward to sync with the best of the backing track.
i don't think that Danny is that creative with his riding.
Alpin, what are you on? there's probably no one more creative! He's pulled off a million things no one else would even try!
Alpin is measuring him against this guy's video.
Do you think he could get up the first climb at cwm carn without dabbing 😉
Drac you have found the stw massive rolled into one. Brilliance. 😀
Just to put the Chris vs Danny argument to bed... they're both brilliant.
For what it's worth, I prefer Akriggs stuff, purely because it's done on a bike like mine, where I ride.
Tyres Continental
@ Drac... i rest my case! 🙂
reckon those boys could learn a thing or two. 😉
perhaps my post came across wrong.... sure Danny is good, i just don't much like his videos now. perhaps they are too corporate, glitsy and slick. maybe i don't appreciate the locations he rides in.
i prefer down-to-earth, ride-where/what-i-ride type videos.
I enjoyed it and it looked stunning, but his riding didn't wow me as much as previous stuff
If Imaginate was Danny's pop single, Epecuen is his move to prog rock.
I think it's all CGI.
Was alright. Would have rather had a new Akrigg one.
"five" is still the best riding short of all time.
I have to agree with what Alpin is getting at. DM set the bar so high in his first few vids, and they were amazing, that it now looks like he's just doing the same circus tricks, but in different locations and it just kinda doesn't wow me anymore. I've seen him do them before, a number of times.
I expect every trick in every video is individual and has it's unique elements and problems to overcome, but it just looks like the same stuff to me.
However, after 5 or 6 years of Akrigg videos, I still always look forward to the next one.
I enjoyed the new Macaskill video and similarly enjoyed all the following videos in this thread. I'm a tad concerned that the word "juxtaposition" has appeared more than once... not sure i'm on the right forum these days!
In a similar vein to other posts, when i saw the first the Inspired Bicycles video back in 2009 it was a massive WOW for me. So fresh and fun. The 2 or 3 after that were equally good but then he seemed to depart slightly on the Imaginate project into something more arty. I did enjoy it although i think i preferred the full length documentary that showed Danny to be a very level headed, passionate bike rider.
This one has left me wondering more about the Argentinian City and Pablo's Villa that recalling his riding exploits - as impressive as they were.
The product placement didnt bother me - at the end of the day they pay for the videos and if watching red bull being drunk for 2 seconds is necessary then so be it. I'd just like there to be an injection of a little more fun and freshness!
I too agree with alpin and was glad someone else thinks the same as me.
Comparing the stuff in his first video which went viral, theres little I can see thats different - its the same thing with a bigger budget and more commercialised. Fair play though - he's got mad skills but its not my cup of tea.
I do prefer Chris Akriggs stuff mainly because its a lot more down to earth, a lot of his stuff is on my local(ish) trails, its ridden on a proper bike most of the time (although I enjoyed his recent CX one and they're works of the devil) and they've got loads better soundtracks!
Amazing video, life is too short to cry about him drinking a Red Bull, the can wasn't even facing forward ffs! The sponsorship is what allows alot of this videos we all love to watch happen, I really don't see the issue.
That POV video is excellent!

Supposedly that frontflip with the tap on the sign is a world first. I don't know how much more different you want?

Therein lies the problem. It was only the fact they showed it from 3 different angles that made me suspect it was probably something impressive, but to my eyes it was just another front flip. Incrementally increasing the difficulty of a trick people have seen many times before is nowhere near as impressive as showing off a brand new trick.
I prefer this
Especially at 3:05
The bench hop was the best bit. Great vid.
Seems like people watch his videos for different reasons (surprise!). There are those who want to see new tricks; pushing the limits of biking, blah, blah, blah. Then there are other who want a good video; something new, involving, artsy, blah... I suppose I'm in the latter group. I prefer Akriggs videos because they're all a bit different, even if the riding's similar. Danny's always look like basically the same thing with different backdrops. Still unbelievably impressive though. Just the manualling along the roof-edge with the hops onto the pillars was great.
I doubt I'd have noticed the product-placement if it wasn't for the complaining here. Then all I could think was that the name/logo wasn't even facing the camera. Idiots!
Why do people always feel the need to bring up Akrigg in a Danny video? It's like comparing apples and oranges, they are both very different riders and don't do anything that is remotely similar to each other!. Personally I enjoy both their videos for very different reasons.
"WOW Fatigue" is a modern complaint......... 😉
Is anyone else having real trouble streaming this video? My connection is plenty fast enough to stream HD content, but this keeps having to buffer every few seconds, even at 480...
I've tried pausing it for a few minutes, but it's still doing it.
Why do people always feel the need to bring up Akrigg in a Danny video?
How many of us can name another "trials" rider who is actively making videos?
they are both very different riders and don't do anything that is remotely similar to each other
Did you see Danny ride along that tree branch just like Akrigg did in Road Bike Party 2? Granted Akrigg is not the gymnast that Danny is, but I'm surprised you can't see the similarities.
For me Danny's vids and riding, for all the slickness etc, lack any personality. Akrigg the complete opposite.

more creative, more honest. just better.
It may be shameful that I've never seen one of his Vids... but that's very very good !
He can ride a bike, no doubt about that but I got bored half way through. Better than his last video with the giant toys tho. Now Akrigg, I could watch over and over
I think if you're a mountain biker, then Akrigg hits the spot, but Red Bull are going for a much wider audience - lots of people watch imaginate and will watch this one that wont watch another cycling vid all year.
Re the product placement... Someone pointed out on here that in Way Back Home, he's wearing 5 10s in every closeup but in most of the riding scenes he's wearing Shimano AM40s. Once you see it, you can't stop seeing it 😆
I'm a tad concerned that the word "juxtaposition" has appeared more than once... not sure i'm on the right forum these days!
Your observations of the Zeitgeist has identified a paradigm shift.
As for the video, I was sadly more curious about the history of the town. I didn't want this to be the case, it's just that the riding displayed is impossible to relate to and the 'wow' factor has diminished with repetition.

You can't compare Danny to Chris as they're two completely different types of rider. The reason Danny's vids are such highly polished numbers is purely down to the fact Red Bull pay for them, do you know where this film was actually premiered? Also this was filmed by the same guy who did the original April 2009 vid which again you can't really compare it to as that was just a video he made to show off his riding like most of us trials riders do every now and again, just this time shit got serious.
His close mates keep pestering him to do a low key vid on a regular trials bike as he's pretty baller on that but sadly due to the whole Red Bull thing he can't, and he definitely isn't a natural rider!
Almost on topic, a couple of other vids you may be interested in, both of them teasers.
I sat down and watched it with my kids
About halfway through they asked if they can watch the bike video where the man gets splashed by the puddle.....as per some previous comments, Macaskill is known as the man who does the somersault off Edinburgh Castle. They'll watch 'five' all day
Bumped into Danny M. a couple of times last week.
Filming a new video in real mountains on a real mountain bike! 🙂
Weather was fantastic and the locations are stunning...
