So after winning a Merida e-mtb on eBay last week it finally arrived today via courier.

Everything seems OK visually and mechanically but I have a daft question in regards to the Shimano display on the bars, how exactly do I turn that on!

I have the battery fully charged and in place with the green lights showing fully charged but pressing the button at the bottom of the display does nothing. Am I being daft and missing something here or is the screen faulty?
Even pressing the up & down controls on the left side of the bar does nothing to turn it on.

Doesn't the Shimano system switch on and off via the button on the battery ?

Display Should come on when the battery is switched. All leads connected to display?

If the battery is on and the display isn't it will be a connection into the back of the display, they take a good push to be fully 'home'.

I have just checked the cables in the back and there securely in. I did remove them and re-fit to make sure, the ends were a little damp so I presume its been cleaned before being boxed up but cant see that making a difference??

When I turn the battery one the screen is just black.

Is there a switch on the side of the display? An ebike I rode recently had this - it was hard to see. I think it was the shimano system. Other buttons on the display looked like they should be the on off switch.

Have you tried riding it yet? sometimes the pedal action starts the unit up.

Shimano's display turns on when you turn on the battery (upto a 3 second press), but it sounds like your isn't working, if the battery lights are on and stay lit, until you press the battery button again. The shimano service documents include diagrams of the external connections from the motor that you can check.

I havent tried riding it yet but have turned the cranks for about 10-20 seconds in my bike stand and it never kicked in.

I will message the seller and see what he says. All wires were in place when it arrived to me, I didnt have to push any back in so presume it should be working.

On my focus with Shimano steps 8000 the on button is on the frame, needs held for 3secs and then again to turn on. Something to do with first press getting it out of sleep mode and second press actually switching on. None of which specifically covered in the manual!

Could be same on yours? As others have said display should come on automatically the display button just cycles through display modes.

Don’t move pedals when switching on or even have any weight on them, you’ll get a torque sensor error (or would if display worked).

Yep, should switch on when you turn on the battery.

The wires are delicate so one could have got damaged on its way to you.

It should power up by either the battery button or holding down the display power button till it comes to life (a few seconds).
There is a proper tool for removing the Di2/Steps cables, or just be gentle with some needle nose pliers

Thanks everyone.
Still battling with this unfortunately.

I have just came in from been away with work and upon putting the battery back in the frame and turning it on the 'shimano steps' text popped up on the screen for a couple of seconds and then it just went off and after numerous attempts its still black.

I noticed my control is different. On one side I have this control:
https://www.deporvillage.net/right-control-shimano-steps-e6010?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqLexlOSZ5AIVRbTtCh2y1A-6EAQYAiABEgIafPD_BwE

Which moves the rear mech (Di2) and on the left the same unit which I presume controls the setting on the display when working? Possibly making the button on the bottom redundant?

On the back there is 4 ports, 3 of them are wired.
1 going to the left control unit
1 going to the right unit which controls the mech (the rear mech moves so there is power)
1 cable heading down and in to the frame which I presume is the power for the display?
last port is just 'open'.

Any more advice?

I dont want to buy a new E8000 display to find thats not the problem.

When putting the bike on a stand and pedalling there is no input from the motor, possibly linked to the display not working or perhaps I have got a dud and the motor is bust?
The original owner is posting me the receipt for it and hopefully if there is a problem we ca get is sorted under warranty (in his name).

The motor will never kick in when turning the pedals in a workstand.

Take bike to a bike shop. Get them to run di2 diagnostics to identify the issue.

If you do an ebay search for
"Shimano SM-PCE1 PC Interface Device for hire 4 DAY hire"

It's £20 with postage to hire the adaptor for 4 days. I did it recently when I hacked my 6000 series Steps.
Download the Steps software free from the Shimano site, plug the adaptor cable into a spare port and diagnose. Really quite easy in a Shimano kind of way

My understanding is, the motor/controller has a warranty for 2 years regardless of who the owner is. You’ll have to pay a shop to diagnose & for any labour but if a part has failed, it should be replaced FOC
