Currently Im on old school 3x9. Im interested in trying out 1x11, but not convinced enough to go big bang.

Presumably i can re-use the middle ring on the front and just remove the front mech (FC-M590 crankset)?

...or are there any special considerations, (eg slap on a narrow/wide front ring)?

Middle ring will only go as low as 32t so that may not be low enough ratio for you if abandoning granny ring.

Typically most go for a thick thin ring on front to avoid dropping chain, you might need some sort of chain retention device if not.

Then it'll be a new cassette, mech and shifters obviously. And chain.

So basically a big bang 🙂

Why not 1x12?
Priced up a new XT drive train and the new Eagle SRAM 1x12 was cheaper.

Might be worth looking around for deals on the NX stuff. Obviously works fine with the normal Shimano hub. No XD driver needed for NX.

am i getting the wrong end of the stick.... are you saying NX can run on the existing 9/10 speed freehub?

i guess their cranks are still all GXP?

If the cranks are 104 BCD, Superstar have a 30t NW ring that works very well.

The NX cassette can run on the 9/10 speed freehub and is fully compatible with Shimano M7000/M8000 11 speed shifters and rear mechs.

You can use any crankset up front (e.g. an older Shimano SLX 3x10 speed I use [I'm unsure on the 9 speed SLX because I started on 10s]). A 30T round single ring will fit where the middle ring was on 104BCD cranks. It'll also nicely put the chain line a bit extra inbound because it has built in ring nuts which let the chain miss the spider arms.

You can then swap from NX Cassette to any Shimano 11s cassette without changing anything.

Should cost a Cassette (£59 for Shimano M8000), a Shifter (£30) + Rear mech (£60), and a single Superstar N/W 30T ring (£30) if your middle ring is 104BCD now. Prices are rough from memory.

You could do it in stages. I was running 3x9, worked out that I could do everything on my local trails. So I got a Superstar NarrowWide I/O 104BCD chainring with the same number of teeth as my existing middle ring. Removed the old chain rings, mech, shifter, cable etc and replaced the middle ring on my existing cranks. I've been running the 1x9 for about 12 months and got on pretty well with it unless somewhere steeper like the Peak district. Did get some chain dropping issues but bought a superstar chainkeeper which seems to have got that sorted (didn't have a clutch rear mech).

I've just bought rear mech, cassette, shifter and chain to upgrade the back end to 11speed for £150 from Wiggle (mix of XT and SLX).
