I would like to get my first (second hand) x bike, but I am unsure what sizes I should be looking at on Ebay.

I am 5ft 6, 29" inside leg and have always been most comfortable on small mtbs, but occasionally have had to fit longer stems and move the saddle quite far back.

I have a 52cm Ribble Road bike circa 1995, which is fine upper body wise, but I can only just stand over the top tube.

So what x bike frame sizes should I be looking at? I assume 'small', but what about 50cm, 52cm or even 53cm..?

Ta

In my experience cx bikes are designed in a way that means you should get the same size as your road bike. They will have a better stand over for the equivalent size. Worth considering if your current road bike is a standard or compact geometry?

FWIW I'm 5.10 and ride a 54cm kinesis.

what size is your road bike.

I think 2cm less is more normal, for the required standover.

I am 5ft 10 as well, 56 Genesis Equilibrium and 54cm Croix de fer

Careful, you might well find a cx bike has less standover than a road bike of the same seat tube length and top tube angle, because the tyres are fatter and the BB drop is probably less. For example, my road bike has a BB drop of 7 cm, my Ridley CX'er only 6 cm.

What's the budget you are looking at? I got at Drossiger from Merlin late last year, great value for money, and they have them in 52cm size. Having a quick look on ebay, there isn't much there, and nothing is particularly cheap.

Looking at £400-£500. Prices do look a bit steep on Ebay at the min, and not much around.

Just had a £400 tax rebate, but happy to wait for the right bike...

Was hoping to get something by May time at least though!

Looks like I should be looking mainly at small or 50cm's... Maybe 52 if I could go and look local.

Should have said that its to be used mainly for commuting an odd few races and hopefully the 3 peaks
