I use them as the only brakes on the asda bike, They're fine
Depends. Yes. Yes.
Allows me to have a lower longer position with a different position for technical stuff.
necessary? No.
do they work? Yes.
does anyone use them? I took mine off..
hands are so narrow - no way i'd want to be braking on the flats.
I have some which you can have if you decide to give them a go. Some people love them but I found I wasn't using them so removed them from the cross bike.
email with detals dq, email in profile
a lot of people seem to put them on then take them off again
I think all decent cross riders will agree they are USELESS waste of space....you dont need them.
Just practise techy stuff on the tops without braking.
bruce
(i've riden cross since i was 10 )
well it'll be for a mtb/cx hybrid so the top tube will be longer than a cxer i think, just wondering about being too stretched on the drops for tech stuff
I've got them.... and yes they do work. They give you an extra position (safely) on the bars... and are ideal for techy sections where being down on the drops would be less ideal....
The only time I used them when I had a cross bike was when on the road if my hands were on the flats. Offroad my hands were far too narrow and I felt I had no control on rough or twisty stuff. If the terrain's fairly flat use the hoods (braking on the hoods with canti's will control you but it's not great for stopping), or if descending on the drops.
How easy are they to remove, do you have to replace the complete cable outer?
redo the whole cable i'm afraid...
yep the whole first part of the outer from the lever to the first cable stop on the frame..
For proper CX racing then no, you don't use or need them.
For everything else - commuting, touring, casual off-road, even the Three Peaks CX they're great. An extra hand position for safe gentle cruising along a canal towpath or a similar place where walkers/dogs are always around.
non cx racer but have a cx style fugly for TPT and other gravel stuff - one plus is that you get a little twiddler to adjust the cable so you can change brake block clearance on the fly if you need to
I removed mine - they were too close together to use with any degree of stability, and (most importantly) my light wouldn't fit on with them taking up all the handlebar space.
The only time I used them was for holding the bike still while I locked the front door when going out (as I discovered the day after I had them removed and accidentally threw the bike across the garden!)
I just ride everything in the drops. Gnarl-core me.
