I shall take this defence if I'm ever in court on video evidence

"If they didn't want to be burgled they shouldn't have had cctv installed."

Clearly a nutjob, not worth the column inches or anyone getting upset over.

I'd agree but he is a nutjob in a position of power, so sadly his opinion matters.

Shouldn't he have just written that in green ink and posted it to the letters page of the Daily Telegraph?

What kind of power, though? Does he carry influence with people who matter?

Serious question.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Lords
http://www.parliament.uk/about/mps-and-lords/about-lords/what-the-lords-do/

He is a member of the House of Lords and made the remarks during a Lords debate on "Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill"

So what he says could influence whether laws protecting cyclists get passed or not.

Maybe remind him of his responsibilities as a Lord?

What I find really quite disturbing with all the media coverage of cyclists at the moment is that its based on experiences in the dear-old south-east, especially London. If any laws change due to the behaviour of cyclists, or motorists, it doesn't seem fair that it should affect us who live in the sticks.

Although I did chuckle at a letter in our local rag this week. I'll scan it and put it up to read here. GrahamS - do you get the Courant down your way? If you've seen it, you'll know the one I mean.

that huffy link misses out some important points he also raised in the house, which nicely contextualise the cycling comments as just part of the derranged rantings of a confused old codger

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/tory-peer-claims-london-cyclists-are-longing-to-be-run-down-by-drivers-so-they-can-film-them-doing-so-8955248.html

He also called for a clampdown on children "mooning" from cars, insisting such behaviour should be tackled by the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill.

The peer told how he had been shocked to see children exposing their bottoms on the way to watch England play rugby recently.

"My wife [...] was totally horrified at the sight of the school buses coming down the road towards Twickenham full of children who were indulging in a pastime which I believe is called mooning," Lord James said.

"The sight of some 40 children mooning simultaneously is not a pretty sight, my Lords."

That's really where I was coming from, see martinhutch just above. I'm sure there's plenty more. I wonder whether anyone in the HoL takes him seriously.

Meanwhile, Hogan-Howe reportedly told LBC he feared that "if you get it wrong, or the driver gets it wrong, the person that’s going to pay is the cyclist”.

Reading through that article. ^This is what stands out. The focus is in the southeast or London is because that is where all of this is happening.

I work there (wait for jibes :)), and have seen both cyclists and motorists act like nutjobs.

But because the population is so concentrated and the number of cyclists is so great. The number of them acting like nutjobs is exaggerated. And like any media, human reaction it's the minority few end up representing the masses.

We need a solution down here. Not new laws.

This one?

Or this old (April 2010) one that has just resurfaced in the "Most Read Today" section:

http://www.hexhamcourant.co.uk/2.2993/hextol/road-hogging-lycra-louts-are-a-law-unto-themselves-1.702474

We've been discussing both of the on the Newcastle Cycle Campaign FB page:

He also called for a clampdown on children "mooning" from cars,

Brilliant ) I wasn't aware that was an issue in society. Maybe the local kids all know him well.

What an utter tool.

I bet he'll retire to his study tonight with a fine port to mourn the abolition of the slave trade and demise of the empire.
