Perhaps "cyclist" not the best descriptor Latter in critical condition. Video here:

Saw this, really sad. But not a lot to say until we know what actually happened and why.

"Saw this, really sad. But not a lot to say until we know what actually happened and why."

If a car driver had come alongside and deliberately opened a door on the guy, or punched him out of the window, everyone'd be frothing.

Because it's bike-on-bike people are being "reasonable".

The fact is, an assault clearly happened, and a guy is in hospital because of it. *Why* the assault happened is immaterial really - it's still assault.

If the assault was in self defence, the "why" is very relevant - no idea, obviously, just saying

Keep your pants on. No one said it wasn't assault. Your getting upset because the lynch mob hasn't turned up yet?

This could easily be one of those "punch outside a nightclub" videos. Horrific, but without knowing why it happened there is not much to add

I'd hope it's not controversial to think that assaulting someone on a moving bike isn't a reasonable way of solving any dispute?

There is a tiny chance they were scrapping all the way down the street of course...

No, of course not. It's a horrific thing to have happened and looked quite deliberate from that short clip.

In the first couple of seconds you can see that the kicker is just behind the guy he kicks off, he probably wants to overtake, but then there are parked cars, so he does a quick swerve to the kerbside and just kicks the other rider for "getting in the way". Just being a ****, like people are.
I'd be surprised if it's anything more than that, but hopefully the downed rider recovers.

Absolutely unacceptable behaviour.

Unless the victim was a bike thief obvs.

I can't see any justification for doing that. No doubt it was due to some completely minor altercation or something.

Just no justification.

Roads are dangerous enough for cyclists as it is without blue on blue events too.

Hope they catch the a-hole.

He's in critical condition in hospital, no bike thief deserves that.

Lol @ DezB. You don't half make things up, you got that from a couple of seconds clip. More likely something happened, guy chases other guy and kicks him of when he catches him.
But it's a shame the term cyclist is used in these things. When I was younger the local thugs used to drive around in stolen cars or estate "pool" cars. Now there on bicycles and are described as cyclists, the same as you or I 🙁🙁

Do we need a less participative version of "cyclist" for such instances?

It carries similar connotations to "motorist", rather than just "driver" - is "man/woman on bicycle" too clunky though?

Even as a news journalist who sometimes writes stuff like this, I have no answer really.

I'm just very perceptive ... More so than you it seems! 😉

Agreed. **** on a bike doesn't roll off the print press/screen quite so well though.

I’m just very perceptive susceptible to confirmation bias

(FTFY) …as we all are. Doesn’t mean it’s the right answer; and even if it is, it doesn’t mean you arrived at it by anything more than luck.

(Been there, done that; I’m not claiming the moral high ground.)

[dons victim blaming hard hat]
My money's on the bloke who got kicked having just run a red light or swerved through a pedestrian crossing and the kicker is chastising him (physically) not to ride like a dick, with unintended levels of consequence. And a serious dollop of hypocrisy.
