Reported in the Sheffield Star 🙁

A cyclist was seriously injured in a crash with a lorry.

The 55-year-old was on the A624 in Hayfield, at the foot of Kinder Scout in the Peak District, when was involved in a collision with a lorry.

The crash, involving the yellow bike and blue MAN 7.5 tonne lorry, was at 9.20am on Saturday. Police interviewed the driver.

Hope it's no one from here - best wishes go to the rider.

Goodness. Really hoping for his full recovery and 'if' needed a prosecution of the driver.

We were riding around that area Saturday morning and didn't hear of anything.

The latest.

"Gus is still ctitically ill in the critical care unit. Today is day 5 which is generally the beginning of a crucial phase with serious head injuries, which can go on from day 5 to day 10. "

Rich - are you riding tonight? I'm not but I'll be in the George later. I think Creedo is doing the same.

Really saddens me when I read these things. Not only for the poor guy but the trauma to his family, the not knowing and then if when what the longer term prognosis may be.

The Pingu household has done far too much praying for speedy recoveries of late, with our own family and friends, something needs changing for cyclists. Our thoughts will be with his family and friends along with our hopes for a speedy and complete recovery,

Some positive news today....

"Gus is no longer in intensive care, and is breathing completely naturally now. Most encouragingly, he has recently had some periods of consciousness when he has been able to speak and respond to questions. His other injuries appear to be making good progress. He continues to sleep a lot or falls back into semi-consciousness, and tires quickly."

Earlier today the driver who hit Gus was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment and banned from driving for 5 years. The magistrates described it as the worst case they had ever encountered. The sentence was the longest they could give, and it sounded as if they wished they could make it longer.

news linky

and an update from Ben's visit

"Ben Creed We were invited to see Gus in Hope hospital a few weeks back. After the initial confusion as to who I was, he was smiling, joking and chatting with his usual dry sense on humour. He was sat in a wheel-chair next to his bed, and obviously has limited movement. With photos on the wall, and Tracey and Katherine sat on his bed, memories and stories were recounted: from the holidays in Spain last year, to rides and routes around Hayfield, and trying to remember his favourite ice cream!

When he was getting uncomfortable in the chair, and while we waited for him to be moved back to his bed, he managed to undo his seatbelt - with a familiar glint in his eye, he looked for a second as if he was free! Apparently we had caught him on a good day, and as he tired, and got more confused, we left so he could get some rest."

News report below.

A friend who was in court said that his Tacho showed that he was doing 30ish when he hit him, slowed slightly, then sped up to 50mph.
