We are currently 'relaunching' our club and discussing insurance. In the past we have replied on the CTC insurance that's included in our club membership of that organisation. As far as we understand though, it only really covers identified ride leaders on officially organised events?

What do other MTB clubs do? Leave it up to individual members to get public liability cover? Go to a specialist insurer (although this seems to be pretty expensive)? Not worry about it at all?

I think the CTC covers group rides and guests, non ctc rider for up to three rides.

Club insurance would normally cover club activities. If members want cover for any riding they do then they'll need their own individual policies.

Maybe I'm reading the CTC club insurance stuff wrong, but it seems to only cover nominated ride leaders rather than individual riders when on club organised rides? Obviously outside of these rides, riders around need to have their own cover if they wanted.

That's the way I understand it, as our club MTB secretary/runs leader, though we are BC affiliated rather than CTC. Why would the members need special insurance for club runs as opposed to just going out for a ride?

FWIW my predecessor had to to fall back on the insurance cover and legal assistance when there was an injury, so you should definitely do it anyway.

So, if there was an accident with a walker (for example) and the walker brought an action against the individual rider, would that then become an action against the club/ride leaders as it was an official ride and the be covered by the insurance?

Or is it rather to cover the club against being sued by a member for an injury while on a club ride?

Sorry if I'm being a numpty here, but want to get it straight in my own head...

I'm the deal with the CTC for our club insurance, the way I see it

3rd party claims against an individual then that's between the 3rd and individual only regardless of club ride or not.

3rd party (say a new rider) has an accident on a club ride and claims against a ride leader for say an inappropriately difficult route, then that's between the 3rd party and club CTC insurance.

Individuals still may want personal insurance on club rides, club insurance covers the 'club' not the riders.

Liability insurance on your house policy in this case I think. If the rider didn't have such a thing then although the walker might win a civil claim, there'd be little chance of getting any compensation I think.

(IANAL, might be miles wrong)

I doubt you'll find an insurance policy that covers all members on a club ride, or it would be hideously expensive. I'd expect individual riders to have their own insurance via CTC/BC etc that covers their liability in the event of a claim.

Theres two slightly different schemes within CyclingUk/CTC as I understand it, depending whether you are an affiliated club or a member club

member club requires all riders to be a full CyclingUK member after their initial rides, an affiliated club has no such rule, affiliated clubs also have a reduced cost CyclingUK membership deal for their members

The insurance is slightly different between the two, but I think that its being gradually brought into line (don't quote me on that)

So, if there was an accident with a walker (for example) and the walker brought an action against the individual rider, would that then become an action against the club/ride leaders as it was an official ride and the be covered by the insurance?

it could be either, but the club insurance would cover the club officials, ride leaders and event organisers, and the club itself.

Or is it rather to cover the club against being sued by a member for an injury while on a club ride?

that too, but in order for that to happen he would likely have to show some negligence (e.g. taking novice riders down a black run)

IIRC, the CyclingUK insurance also covers the club & officials for trail-building, club BBQ etc.

Thanks ninfan (and everyone else too). That helps to clarify things. Think we'll stick with CTC/CyclingUK.

We are an affiliated club BTW.
