Hey you smucks!!*

I've been sent out to NYC for 3 weeks (!) with work and I'm just coming to the end of my first week. I'm here on my own and it's a pretty depressing experience and unless I do something active I'm probably going to drink myself to death.

Sooo, I'm not a big one for sight-seeing but I do enjoy riding my bike (obvs) so my plan is to pop down to one of the local bike shops and pick myself up a bike for the next few weekends. I did consider hiring one but being here for so long it actually makes financial sense to buy then see if they can ship it back to the UK once I'm done.

Anyway, I'm currently eyeing up a Fuji track as I ride a lot of fixed in the UK and it's muchos cheapness out here. Does anyone have any suggestions about where to go once I've been round all the usual sights? I'm based in Time Square (yuck) but I've got two weekends to kill so plenty of time to go further afield. I ride in the middle of London a lot so being in mental traffic doesn't bother me.

Any/all suggestions welcome.

*they say that right?

If you do be aware you're legally obligated to use cycle lanes, have a bell and two working brakes.

Good to know - I'd only planned on one brake as I'm going fixed. Two it is!

It's the compulsory cycle lanes which i gather causes more trouble.

A friend (or vague acquaintance more accurately) also has me believe, his very nice road bike was impounded for not having a bell attached to it after he got pulled for not riding in the (full of illegally parked cars) cycle lane.

[Edit: if true, more likely because he was a gobby sod when pulled]

I lived/worked just outside the city for a few years and used to ride at Hunter Mountain and a bit further afield windham bike park, both are pretty easy to get too from the city if you're inclined to go that far

There was also a few locals ones around Newburgh on the Hudson

I'd head out along the Hudson heading north. Nice riding beyond Yonkers and over to the Palisades.

Thanks folks, appreciated. ChunkyMTB - is that road riding or off-road? May decide on what bike I buy!

To cover most things in a shortish time I'd go for a hybrid. Blue Mountain, Westchester area has proper mtb trails but it's much further north. The route I'm thinking of it mostly disused railway lines/gravel track etc.

This time of year is my fav in NYC (also early spring)

I shall be there around Christmas when its freezing.....

Yeah - apart from the rain weather wise it's lovely at the moment. Just warm enough.

OK, will have a wonder down the bike shop at lunch and look at potential purchases. I don't want to spend a huge amount in case they can't ship it, but I also don't want a walmart effort because it'll be shit!

Schmucks, surely?

There's a park there in't there? Somewhere in the middle. Gets busy though.
