Going on a weeks holiday to Hercig-Novi in Montenegro.
I've looked on the map and there really isn't much there other than a few roads that go to nowhere so my CX bike is looking like the best bet
Has anybody been there?
Is it safe to be out on your own on a nice bike?
Any help/advice appreciated
Cheers
Ken
I've never been Ken but I do know a girl who runs a guiding company out there. The stuff she's shown me looks fantastic ... doesn't seem to be any trouble with crime/getting stuff nicked, etc.

I spent a couple of weeks in Budva in '06 and '07, primarily for paragliding but I did a bit of biking as well. Once you get more than a few km from the coast the country is very under developed so don't expect any trail centres but if you know where to look there is serious potential.
If I were you I'd contact Robin at www.montenegrofly.com. An ex-pat from Stroud he's branched out into mountain bike guiding in the area. Don't worry about crime, although it is a relatively poor country I never felt any thing other than welcome.
Last piece of advice: Don't go for the road riding. Although the winding mountain roads look great, the crazy drivers will make you wish you had stayed at home.
Anybody know of any biking to be had in the kotor bay area and any local guides?

We'll be staying in Hercig Novi so will be in the same area as you. When are you going?
we're staying in prcanj just by kotor between 18th and 25th this month. Looks like you aren't that far away. I've emailed a couple of guiding places asking about options. I'd be wanting to do some technical singletrack riding but will only be able to do a day or two's riding so would probably want a guide to get the best out it.

I'm there from 17th to 24th and am taking a bike for sanity potection so will be just going out from the house we're renting (going with GF's family)
Not sure about CX as I've not taken a bike there, but +1 for avoiding the roads. Was there in June and was amazed by some of the driving.
the CX idea has been shelved in preference for my 5 Spot.....life is tough somedays
I'll let you know once the companies I've been in touch with get back to me any info I get.
