Off to Gran Canaria for holibubs soon and want to get some cycling in - either road or MTB - so looking for some suggestions on routes, bike hire and guides on the island. So if you've been there cycling, pray tell
Not Gran Canaria, but I'm just back from Tenerife (last week), and I've ridden a few times in Fuertoventura.
I couldn't recommend Free Motion highly enough. they were brilliant! They do road and mountain bike hire, and tours.
Don't bother with the online booking. Just give 'em a bell and have a chat about what you fancy. They couldn't be more helpful.
I'd recommend riding off road, as it's such a unique landscape. like riding on the surface of the moon. Really different. Not too GGGNNAAARRR, but you can really bang the miles in. Fast XC 29er hardtails are where it's at.
Riding on the roads is a joy. Well surfaced empty roads with no nobheads.
Some piccies from my jaunt out last week
Cheers binners - freemotion came up in my search - days guided ride with FS 29er for €84. Sound about right?
They were great! The bike I picked up was immaculate. Trick is to do a tour with them one day, then you get a guided feel for the geography and the terrain, then you can hire a bike later (that Rockhopper was €18 a day) , and just head out on your own
Yes, Freemotion are excellent. +1
Good bikes, rides, prices and organisation
I did the Freemotion No Sherpa tour, 45 km from the centre to the coast, including some short hike a bike sections, and lots and lots of rocky descending in spectacular scenery, some of it pretty gnarly, and some nice natural flowy stuff too. Plenty there to warrant a 160mm bike
On Fuerteventura (with Geoff from Caletta Cycles - also highly recommended) we did a mahoosive climb up on to the plateau, and then came barreling down some swoopy singletrack, through a valley, towards the coast. When we got there Strava told me we'd been averaging 27mph. You don't often get the chance to do that of-road. Riding in the Canaries is ace....
😀
I did the Wednesday mtb trip last year with free motion on Gran Canaria and I'm doing the Friday one with them in a few weeks.
Can't fault them really. The ride last year was good but fairly tame on the stumpjumper. Apparently the Friday one is a bit more suited to a fs.
Cheers all - got the Friday trip booked with Free Motion
