Anyone done this? Any thoughts? How many days etc? A pal and I are toying with the idea, or possibly a cycling trip around the Bavaria or Black Forest sort of areas.

Basically looking to do maybe 70 to 80 miles a day carrying camping kit and looking for nice German beer at the end of each day.

Oh, and it would be late September or early October, so what's the weather like in southern Germany then?

One of the bike mags had basically that trip in it recently. Forget which one. Must be mostly alongside rivers too with the right route, but there's lots of hills too. Time it right and it's Oktoberfest, so plenty of German beer 🙂

Sept/Oct should be OK weather wise I think.

i rode from London to Munich back in 2003 (that really hot summer!).

i took the ferry from Portsmouth to Le Harve and followed the Sien river into Paris. from there i went a little south and then headed west to Troyes, through the Vosges mountains to Mulhouse, down the Rhein towards Strasbourg before leaving and heading into the Black Forest. hit the Neckar river and visited a friend in a small uni town before heading south to Lake Constance (Bodensee in German). from there i cycled through the "foothills" of the alps, stopping off at Neuschwanstein castle (the famous Disney one) before turning north and riding to Munich.

took me three weeks, but i stopped for a few days in Paris and at friends place. i think i had 15-16 days on the bike. i think i clocked up nigh on 1600 miles. was covering over 130 miles on some days. i was young, fit and stupid.

edit: oh yes, i timed it for the begin of the Oktoberfest, but be aware it starts mid September....

weather around September is almost always good down here in southern Bavaria. when ever the Oktoberfest is on the sun shines, and that's not just the beer talking.

The magazine was Cycling Plus, and that was the article that kicked off the whole idea. We are slightly time-constrained, and are probably too old (and fond of beer) to be knocking out 130 miles a day, but will look into a shortened version. Thanks for the advice.
