I'm heading out on a mini 2-day tour in a couple of hours.
I stuck a pin in the map (not too far from home though!) and booked accommodation as near to it as possible. Then plotted a route there and back (65km there and 85km back).
So, I'm heading to The Bickerton Poacher!
Chucking it down all day, so I'll be ready for a shower, pint and food when I get there. I will ride back home (Marple) tomorrow via a quick tea and toast stop at my sister's house in Sandbach. Hopefully I've plotted a route that will mainly keep me on quiet B-roads.

Then I'm doing another 2-dayer Sunday/Monday with the wife. Similar planning... heading for Grindleford.

Hope to build back up to longer tours through Spring.

Can I do it direct from my phone?!

So panniers? No idea how these old Flickr links will work.

Rush hour in north ****stan:
https://flic.kr/p/HUoYPZ

Me and Mao in Kashgar; they say the past is a different country, but it's not one I intend going back to.
https://flic.kr/p/HUoYPi

Awesome downhill coast from the Penzi La into Zanskar.
https://flic.kr/p/D6RHoj

Somewhere in Himachal Pradesh.
https://flic.kr/p/DgqVQM

Future touring plans? In a week and a half I'll be heading off through the Welsh borders on a cobbled together bike with two small panniers and two 5l drybags mounted on the forks with DMR hinged clamps, intending some sneaky pirate bivis in old ruined Marcher castles....

Last spring my first foray into multi day trips was a ten day jaunt from home in Calderdale to Tarbet Ness and back to Inverness for the train. If id had another two days I'dve gone on to Durness. Some of these are in other threads but WTH!
Included Pennine bridleway, Dun Fell, Kielder, Glentress where my son joined me for a half day as far as the Pentlands, top half of West Highland Way, Fort Aug. to Garbat sections of HT550 and round Ben Wyvis.

I’m bikepacking on my rigid mtb from FofD to Grenoble in May, then swapping to my gravel bike to do as many TdeF classic Alpine passes as I can fit in a week before getting a lift back.

If that goes okay then I think I’m going to pack my bike into a box and fly to either Athens or Istanbul in August and ride back to the FofD from there.

Both trips wild camping / campsites for a treat.

Me in my Argos Pro Action 1. Kodachrome Basin NP, Utah. Pic courtesy of Parker Boyack, one of a group of motorbikers I shared the group camp with. There isn't much photoshop there. It was as clear a night as I have ever had. A 5800 feet up and a long way from any light pollution.

Today's "ride"...
12km away from my accommodation for the night and BOOM... Chain snapped. Obviously I didn't have a spare link or chain breaker tool with me 🙈

Hobby-horse / scooted the bike the rest of the way. Knees, back, everything hurting!
Anyway, I now have a pint in hand and a wife en-route with spares 😄

Plans: (following your advice @ton) decided to not wait a few years and just book a family tour in June. We are going to cycle off the ferry at Hook of Holland and ride to Rotterdam. Then on to the Hauge and back down to the ferry over a week.

MrsChrist is a bit not sure and my 3 kids (5,7&10) are very excited.

Can't wait!!

Great thread @ton 👍

This year I've only a three day trip planned so far, bits of the C2C and the Reivers Route equivalent.

But requesting a C2W voucher today for a Fairlight Secan (promotion at work and 50th birthday treat to myself) with the aim of doing far more touring from next year.

Vague plans for the next few years:
The Torino Nice Rally in 2024 courtesy of @jameso
Round Iceland trip
Norway gravel route that I read about on here some time ago, and the Lofoten Islands
Get the train to Paris and cycle home to Edinburgh via Roubaix and Flanders, WW1 graves at Ypres etc, Bruges, Amsterdam, ferry to Newcastle and home via Northumberland.

@supernova I'm in the Chartreuse near Grenoble. Happy to help out/ meet up/ head out on a ride together if i can help/ am available.

You are aware most of the big cols will still be closed in May? Usually open mid-late June. They are closed for a reson not least of which is avalanche risk, and towards opening they are often purging the slopes above with explosives.

Last week we did our first overnighter since pre-Covid. It was also our 17month old daughter’s first overnight stop (a big part of not having got out sooner!)

No camping this time, thought we’d figure out just basic kit before throwing tent etc in too. Not her best couple of days on the bike but such is life with a sometimes grumpy, teething toddler- we’ve had much happier, longer rides in worse conditions!

We followed one of the lost lanes routes from liphook down to the South Downs and it was lovely. Make a cracking one day ride or as we did it, a lovely two day pootle. Foresters Arms at Grafham was a great overnight stop too.

Further plans are to inch up the distance, figure out packing a bigger tent and all the other caboodle and do at least a 2 nighter this summer.

If you're looking for a good toddler friendly tour we have done Isle of Wight trips twice. Once when #1 was 3 and once when #1 was 6 and #2 was #1. We follow some of the round the island route and stayed in a premier Inn.

Well timed. We are currently doing a 12 day tour and sightseeing trip between Florence and Rome, taking in the Strade Bianche/L’Eroica routes. First time we’ve done anything like this and it’s fabulous. Rest day today in a Tuscany hill top town.

Avoid the main road a3054 running though the middle.

There is a lovely cycle route along to Newport from sandown I think. Old railway line.
Sandown / shaklin is a good place to stay as there is a nice beach, a cheesy peir / arcade and a poo museum! There are a few play parks along the island route that we stop off at for short break.

We only do hotels with the kids on bikes as we are loaded enough so can't comment on camp sites. We do one travel day (ferry ride to accomodation) one day at location where we try to walk or minimal cycling then one day back cycling / ferry.

Last tour was Yarmouth to Sandown and was about 55-60km and was the hardest 55-60km I have ever ridden but towing a 6 year-old on a follow me tandem + a chunky one year old plus nearly all the luggage for 4 does mean a heavy load.

@ton - I'm cycling home from Kingussie.

Not the most amazing of peaceful tours, just something I said I would do for years.

Possibly regretting it as I'm still head on into a 'stiff Scottish breeze'.... 😬

I'm currently lowering the tone of a posh bistro in Auchterader - is the only place open(!) and they can have a sweaty smelly cyclist for soup...
