You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Chris Boardman launched a consultation on additional cycle network for the Greater Manchester area - 75 miles of segregated lanes and about 1,000 miles of additional non-segrated routes.
The plan is open for consultation: https://mappinggm.org.uk/beelines/
Also there's a Greater Manchester Cycle Campaign pledge form if you support the plans - https://forms.gmcc.org.uk/buzz/
The Mayor has defended the proposed £160 million pound investment in walking and cycling as one of the cheapest and most effective ways to improve people's lives in the area.
There seems to be at least some ambition to change what is a pretty shocking base line (ridiculously high rates of short journeys made by car and awful cycling and walking infrastructure) and everyone I've met who has run into Boardman say he's a man on a mission. Fingers crossed.
Are you going to interview him for the magazine? I remember reading some years ago that he liked a bit of mountain biking.
All they have to do is to look at the new cycling infrastructure in Rusholme and do something else!

The Rusholme cycleway sucks from our point of view - less safe, slower, but probably the vast majority of users think it's great.
Manchester feels like a safe city to cycle in to me as it stands, relative to some other places I've lived - but experienced cyclists aren't really the target market for 1000 miles of non-segregated cycle routes. It's non-cyclists.
I got a leaflet handed to me on Sunday, make Mancester more like Amsterdam - well they are halfway there with the amount of weed smoke these days 😉
Having had a look at the map I'm looking for a better summary of what is planned? I'd love to see more dedicated lanes along side trams etc. some decent cycle highways as such that means you can get across the city quicker and easier
I've only ridden up through Rusholme once but the stuff from Whitworth park north to the city was a lot better than that
However if they want a quick win a petrol strimmer and the canals/NCN's would help

I agree with that comment Mike. It would be nice if the council's ran a small tractor with a heavy duty cutting device along the shared paths every year rather than the build and forget for several years approach.
It’s looks good to me. Chris Boardman was partly behind the city bike scheme in Liverpool but basically had to give up as the council offered little or no infrastructure changes to our awful road junctions on busy routes. A sadly missed opportunity mainly financial reasons I would imagine. Hopefully it will be a plan for other cities to follow.
It's early days in the planning and the various areas making up GM have drawn up their own plans which can be seen at the boundaries - Stockport doesn't match Manchester for example. But that's detail to be thrashed out. I think there is potential for a great network.
My own pet beef though is there should be a nationwide network of cycle paths connecting towns. Now who's going to champion that one?
