Some cities and towns have cycle lanes, Manchester has cycle ditches.

I split my time between Mudchester and London, and whilst i can confirm the capitals streets are not paved with gold, they aren't paved with a layer of slime either. I believe this might have something to do with the strange beasts I see on Londons' roads that they call road sweepers..

I have yet to see any such strange beasts in Manchester, although I have only lived here for 30 years so maybe I should give the authorities a bit more of a chance and I must confess that last year I saw a milk float masquerading as road sweeper on two occasions, [Although I fail to see how they can make it more than 200 yards before their bellies are full.]

The assortment of trail obstacles and detritus that fill the cycle ditches of Mudchester make for involving riding, swerving and hopping potholes, looking out for potholes within pre existing pot holes whilst practicing your drifting skills on the composite layer of mulched leaves, building rubble and bits of trees dusted with broken glass and plastic bottles can be quite thrilling, livening up an otherwise mundane and boringly safe commute to work

There's the added mental challenge of simultaneously having to guess what may be lurking under that pond beneath your wheels whilst being required to decipher the meaningless hieroglyphs painted about the road surface, some of these hieroglyphs are also occluded by the aforementioned ponds, thus requiring you to make a double guess.

It could be a new sport I tells 'ya. Forget gravel racing, How about the Mudchester Mulch Commute Challenge. It could necessitate a new genre of bike to stimulate a flagging industry, they could call it the 'Mulch Bike', [or alternatively you could convert an e-bike into a leaf-blowwer/active jet washer combo.]
