Been doing a few CX races this year. As they were just for fun I just used some spare wheels I had with Alex Race 24 rims. I have snapped 2 spokes on the rear wheel on separate occasions so looking for other options. These rims are only 14mm internal width so is this too narrow for CX use or are they just weak rims?
My other options are to use Shimano R500 wheels (15 mm internal width but I am concerned that 20 radial laced spokes on the front may not be strong enough)or buy some basic wheels from Merlin-tiagra hubs on Mach 1 Omega rims (32 spokes but only 13mm internal rim width).
I only use 33mm wide tyres so don't need wider rims just for these.
Opinions welcomed and thanks in advance.
Probably weak, poor build, low spoke count etc causing breakages.
R500s should be ok, tho a std build stronger and more easily repairable
Rim width not relevant really IMO.
Fulcrum Racing 7's will take a beating, though a bit heavy, or try either Mavic open pro's or open sports on a Tiagra hub, depending on budget.
I have Planet X A57s on my CX bike
I have the tiagra/omega rim combo on the cross bike I use for local trails/bmx tracks and genraly jumping around and still straight after a year with minor tweeking I run mini vs so have to keep in good condition
