Hi guys I’m in need of a little help.

Ive bought a CX frame, partly for a bit of fun around the woods and partly for a commute as I wanted disc brakes.

My original plan was 2 wheelsets one for each condition.

But I’ve gone and bought a Cx frame with a 15mm thru front and 12mm rear. All the cheaper road disc wheels I had seen were either 12/12 or QR.

My budget was around 100 per set, but most of the 15/12 wheels for cx seem to be over £200!

Then I found the old canyon CX actually used crossrides, these are pretty cheap and would make a good enough wheel for now, but I’m getting a bit confused with all the standards.

The criticism of using 29er wheels on a cx seems to be with the tyre width? Not being able to run 33-38 tyres easily. The old crossrides seem to have an 19mm internal width, the newer ones say 21, but on the Mavic site it says they will take 36mm tyres

Any thoughts?

can this work ok for now?

The dropouts on the cx frame are 142, so match the crossrides.

crossrides or similar will be fine, Halfords used to spec their cross bikes with mavic xm319 rims which are mtb but narrower than is popular now (I actually sold a new pair on ebay recently for wee money)

21mm internal width rims are fine for narrower tyres.  I was running 25c on a 21mm internal with no issues whatsoever

I run 38c on a 25mm internal rim no problem.

So this should work?

I presume CL is centerlock? Does this pose any issues or is it just rotor choice.

Just rotors, but you can get a centrelock to 6-bolt adaptor if you wanted to stick with regular rotors/have a stash to use.

Don't worry about internal width, I've got 32mm road tyres on a set of 21mm internal DT rims

Hope Hoops with the 'XC' rim work great for a CX bike, and the narrow CX rim is the least popular/trendy variant so they tend to be good value.
