Obviously flat vs drop bars and the op to have suspension, F and/or R but in essence, they both have big wheels and that's how they differ from yr standard mountain bike.

So for smooth-ish woodsy trails, is there really that much difference given a lot of people seem to be riding 29ers rigid?

Well one's a cyclocross bike, the other's a mountain bike.....

I guess geometry and frame construction will also differ, I get overlap on my CX and never do on my MTB (26 not 29 though)

The only difference between 29ers and 26ers is their wheel size. Rather than drop bars, geometry, skinnier tyres. Or can you not get beyond those outrageous wheels?

There are exceptions to both your initial assumptions. Fundamentally I would say it's easier to say the only similarity is one of rim diameter, and that's pretty much where it ends.
