I've foolishly entered my local CX league. To take my mind of my impending humiliation, I'm getting my bike ready. The bike I'm going to use (2009ish Voodoo Simba) has some continental cyclocross *something* tyres on that are good in the dry (needle type tread). I've also got some Schwalbe CX Comp on another bike I can rob if the going is a bit wetter. So I'm just looking out for a pair of full on mud tyres that I can chuck on if it looks like it's going to be slimey. Preferably not too pricey so as not to upset the better half. Suggestions welcome (700c). They don't need to be the best, as I can assure you I won't be. 🙂
Was going to say the cx comp would be fine in the mud, but my pair are old and look to have a heavier tread to the current ones, so looks like they've been redesigned.
Vittoria's cross XL is good and has been discontinued, so I've seen them available cheap online. Race that no prob in the mud. The newer vittoria cross tyres are terreno wets which are also good but would be more expensive.
Michelin tyres are often a good value - rarely get mentioned like more MTB / cross focussed brands but usually decent at minimum.
Schwalbe X-one all round (tubeless or with tubes).
I've raced ~50cx races on these over the last two years and they are fine in almost everything. I use the X-one bites when really sloppy but that's because I'm fortunate to have a spare bike with them on.
For ref me+bike is 92ish kgs and I'm running the tubeless flavour at 28ish psi in firm / dry conditions and the tubed bites down toward 20psi in slop.
I'll second Gary's thoughts, the Vittoria Cross XL if you can get them, or the Terreno Wet - these are bloody brilliant.
What size tyres can you get in your frame as the 38c ones are easier to find and often cheaper. HighonBikes is the go to place.
Thanks for the replies. Looking at the bike, it has 35c ones on there at the moment, and although I reckon I could squeeze larger in, it would be at the expense of decent mud clearance, so probably self defeating. I've had a earch around, and can pick up Schwalbe X-one all round for around £17ea, so I'm leaning towards those.
