I've ordered a CX bike which I intend to use for general bimbling around, shopping trips, leisure rides etc.
the wheels and hubs on it are OK and will last but I've got a pair of Hope XC hubs knocking around..... And I like building wheels..!
So, who makes a good value, black, CX disc rim in 32h drilling?
I'm not bothered about anything too light, but a decent balance between weight, strength and value. Any recommendations?
Archetype been great for me. Think they're in black & 32h.
Stans Ironcross - light, reasonable value, but I think they're only rated up to about 45psi. Otherwise look at their 340 rim. Or for versatility with a bit of a weight penalty, the Grail.
For the pro, deep(ish) section look, there's the Aileron by Velocity.
Loads of people rave about the H+Sons which manage to make a rim look trendy 🙂
I'm getting some Ailerons, it was between them of h+sons
I have some nice Pacenti rims . They are sold as 29ers so are nice and wide but fine with 25mm tyres as well. annoyingly Planet x has them on sale at half price. Build up lovely
Hmm. Not heard of most of those, I'll check them out.
TBH I was thinking Mavic 719s.... 🙂
Discount the Stans straight away. 45psi? That's daft. Too expensive too.
WTB frequency i19
Pacenti cl25
Whats wrong with 45psi max on a 'cross rim? Who in their right mind would run any more!
Mavics if you're on a budget, either something like the A719? Or even Open Pro's if you want something fairly light, reliable & clincher, but aren't bothered about deep profile.
I quite like the WTBs. Who's the distributor? I'll see if I can get them trade like I can the Mavics
Max on Stan's rims is for tubeless only
Peter you work in a bike shop? Have you come across spokes being pulled out of rims on disc braked road bikes? I'm told it's because the forces are much greater on the road rather than mtb or cx where the grip is less.
Anyway, apparently Mavic only release stuff when it properly works so if they have a cx disc rim in their range I'd go for that. A719 would be fine too but more touring/light 29er I'd say.

Read the OP. it's got to be an all round rim. I'm pumping the identical tyres I'm getting on my bike on my wife's bike up to 70-80psi for commuting/shopping/touring. I might even chuck some 25mm road tyres on now and again. 45psi is no good to me in the slightest. 🙂
WTB=Hotlines.
Ah, sorry, my mistake. Serves me right for flitting between here & 'work'
Fast Forward do a nice pair of carbon rimmed tubular disc wheels .A bit pricey though !
Hotlines - Duhh. 'Course it is. 🙂
Dunno if we deal with them.
Hplus son archetypes here, good rim.

Yes I do, mechanic.
Not as such no.
But I have (and recently) cracked a rim myself at the spoke holes through sheer overloading it. That was a Mavic 717 I used for fully laden touring. Sheer weight killed it. It's actually on the Hope hubs I mentioned above right now.
So I guess it's possible, but it'll be fatigue that's doing it, maybe on a rim that's not disc specific.
Ive got stans crests on the cx if you use tubes you can pump up as hard as tyre allows.
Velocity A23 disc - I've got some on ProIIs on my >X<, so therefore have to recommend them in true STW style 😀

Firestarter - what tyres do you use on the crests?

Never ridden 3 Peaks...?!

Not yet (tried but not managed to get an entry) but I have run around the area & ridden my cx all over the Peak District at lower pressures than that.
Not tried tubeless for it yet but running inners, personally usually go for a pressure somewhere around 75-85psi...
Peaks?about 80psi every year otherwise you will pinch flat on Whernside and Pen y ghent
This is exactly what the new Stans Grail is for isn't it? Wide road/high pressure cx?
Alpha 340s have been good for me. 2.1 thunder Burts, 35c cx speeds, 28c GP4S.
I'd buy grails now they're out, though.
Hmm. I can get 719s for just over £30 each. That's hard to ignore.
I've used 319s on Hope hubs on my Fargo and another pair on my El Mariachi, both have done extensive off road tours and have been faultless.
I got a pair of 32h 719s from a German sale about a year ago , just about to get them built up for the Vaya.
the point about tubeless is that you don't pinch flat, so don't need 80psi...

Agreed, but on 3 Peaks even 45psi in tubeless isn't enough...
Another option if you deal with Ison are the Halo 29er rims. I recently picked up a couple of pairs super cheap, and they built up nicely. Eyeletted rim, around 400g, mid-width, even went up tubeless without much fuss. One set is now my regular riding wheels on the disc Kite.
I got some Pacenti TL25s recently for fat road / CX-ish wheels, 21mm internal. Ideal, work with tubeless or std tyres over 45psi with no probs seating tyres with tubes (which was my my concern with Stans).
Built onto a Halo Spin Doctor rear hub that came with a recommendation from someone who's used and abused them for a long time, a really nice hub that's quite under-rated I think. He also rated the Halo rims Sam mentions ^ there.
Cp Sorry for late reply ive got 35mm schwalbe rapid robs on at the min
Sam, is that the Halo Vapour?
Arch Ex on my CX. As above, if you use tubes then you should be fine with road tyres too (though nothing too narrow).
FWIW, I used to use around 85psi with tubes to prevent pinch flats (and even then I got them), I now use around 40-60 (depending on how much road I'll ride) tubeless and did the Bristol bikefest at 40psi with no issues and not even the merest indication that the tyre was bottoming out onto the rim. I'm big and heavy too, not to mention not the smoothest rider so I reckon that the pressure limit is fine. As I said though I have gone up to 60 with no issues.
