I have an older style octalink 105 chainset with a smaller outer ring and a ultegra (or mebe da -forgot) bb on my touring/commuting/cx bike, which i have tried to keep low budget.

but i also have a new tiagra compact chainset and htII bb i could wap on.

is it worth it? the tiagra looks heavier but is potentially a fair bit stiffer (the 105s seem to flex a fair bit) and more servicable. i might need to get another bcd outer ring though.

thoughts please

I've been using a tiagra compact with htII BB on my CX for 3 years now for commuting, it's been fine. Replaced the rings /chain / cassette a couple of months back, still on the original BB.

I've never noticed flexiness in any of my cranksets though

for my cx i bought a dead cheap 6600 ultegra from germany when they were silly cheap, very good, imagine the tiagra would be as good but heavier

There won't be any noticeable difference, sorry.

You could always try it.
