How do the cwmcarn/Risca off piste trails hold up in winter?

Looks a like plenty of stones/rock on the surface on YouTube vids

Muddy mess best left until dryer months? Or does it ride ok in the wet?

Cheers

James

Well you should just go and find out. If it turns out to be a muddy mess you can bail and just do the normal Cwm Carn trails instead.

Thanks, 4 hour drive so wouldn’t mind a bit of local info before planning a trip

Rode it last sunday in the rain, they do ride fine in the wet, lots of groundwater as the popular ones are mostly down to the bedrock.

That said they have been absolutely hammered this summer and are already incredibly rough and rutted out in places.

Very much track-dependant. Some tracks hold up better than others but then they can be the popular ones so get hit harder when the other ones get too sloppy to ride. Some have a surface that's fine in the dry or full wet but turn to a sticky, slippery gloop when it's just wet or drying. I'd plan around a dry-ish spell the few days before you travel.
