what are the twrch and the cafall trails like at cwmcarn?
Really good. Twrch is very manufactured with lots of good swoopy bits. A big climb to start and a long descent to finish. Consistent in all weathers. The Cafall is more natural with roots and ruts. Still a big chunk of climbing. Noticeably slippier in the wet.
Good descriptions. Cafall has some quite techy downhill switchbacks in it too which get quite slippy.
My favourite is cafall despite it getting a bit muddy and slippy in winter. I also prefer the climb on cafall even though there's more of it as the climb on twrch is a hateful, evil, techy, rock strewn, fist in the face at the beginning of the ride.
I dont find the twrch climb that bad. Its a bit techy and certainly a challenge to clear without dabbing, especially strait out of the car park but it is over pretty quick, and on the whole is a steady climb whereas the cafall climbs are more up and down so you gain height a lot slower. Both are fun trails though and if youre doubling up id recommend doing the twrch first.
You can also opt to do the pedalhounds DH instead of the final descent on cafall. Its obviously a lot steeper and shorter but a good alternative now and again
Both are big climbs. Cafall perhaps a bit more of sections of down then climb which can be tedious on the climbs but the descents are reasonably technical and steep in places. Twrch haven't done in ages but remember it being one big horrid climb and a more Afan style flowing trail down.
Cafall was getting borderline being like the black at Brechfa, which I hate, but the climb bits are not as bad and the descent sections a lot better, so I do like Cafall. Also, and I'm not someone who rides to climb, the climb sections in places have flow to them, pedal to a rise, swoop down and up to the next rise, and so on. Much nicer if you get the flow going than just a tedious slog.
