Apologies if this has been done already. Saw this this morning

http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/15919154.Cwmcarn_Forest_Drive_to_get___160_000_cash_boost/

"to expand bike trails, enhance existing walking trails and to create a new welcome and arrival zone at the entrance to the site."

Sounds pretty good to me. Anyone know more on the plans for the trails?

As the £160k is going on walking trails, visitor experience + biking trails, I can't see that theres gonna be a whole new loop added.

Investment is obviously a good thing, cwmcarn was 10 years too late adding a 2nd trail, hopefully get a bigger network there.

Fake news. I was told there'd be no money for this kind of thing without the EU. 🙂

This money is from the EU .......

'This project has received funding from Caerphilly County Borough Council and through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.'

fortunately we havent left yet

I read on the side of a bus a while back that leaving the EU would mean that we could spend £350m a week on trail development, or something like that.

Any spending is good although even £50k doesn’t go far in terms of trail building

£160k from the EU means it’s actually. £266k of UK taxpayers money less the £100k EU haircut - gotta pay for those lunches and air taxis don’t you know

even the EU spending £160k on cycling trails would be enough to send the telegraph/mail etc into a frothing brexie frenzy!

Actually a 3km green trail would be great excuse to take the family there

It’s good news in so much as they’re willing to invest, which might just mean they won’t change their mind and close the place in 6 months, well maybe, stranger things have happened.

Sadly as above, it’s a pittance of new trial - 3k, my cynicism might be playing up, but that’s roughly the length of trail that’s been felled recently and needs rebuilding in places, most of it is going on a ‘Welcome Area’ I think they mean the pay station for the forest drive is going to be replaced?

I’m not sure what trails cost to build these days, but I know that the original DH track cost £80k back in the day, the bulk of the cost was laying the tunnel and relaying the road, also Back on Track pretty much rebuilt the bottom half of it recently without any headline grabbing grants.

I do get slightly annoyed by these sorts of things, I can’t help but think the powers that be don’t really ‘get’ it. Afan got a pile of cash years back, instead of building new trails they built a roof for the cafe, it was still a bit rubbish and they closed it.(now reopened in private hands).

I think most riders (who out number walkers about 20 to 1 by the looks of the people in the car park) go for the trails, Cwmcarn was popular when there was a steamy little cafe in the carpark, the massive centre is nice, but it’s very quiet bar the cafe and I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone say “let’s go to Cwmcarn, the cafe is amazing!”.
