Fancy doing a big Peak ride on Saturday and I've never ridden Cut Gate

Is it suitable for a big heavy e-bike and is it going to be terrible conditions at the moment?

Not been up that way for a while but my gut reaction is that it's too early for cut gate regardless of what type of bike.

I did it the other week(A bit into new year) on mine.
Typical peak riding really. Ten mile boulder garden interspersed with horrific bogs. 🙂
Was nice.

I don't think it's ever particularly dry up there is it?

It's not really the kind of riding I'd choose on a ff eeb in retrospect. Not enough gradient either way I thought. Regular bike might have suited ME better.

its been very wet around holmfirth (6-7 miles north) the past week, so would assume it could be wet up top.
that said the paving across the bog of doom make it far easier these days.

waterproof boots and socks if you go up i'd say

It's fine on an ebike but even despite the much needed armouring on bog of doom there's still lots of peat near the cairn, best wait until it's dry or else it'll get ripped to shreds.

As above really, an ebike wouldn't put me off at all. OTOH the weather over the last week or so likely would, coupled with a four day Easter break? Yeah I can think of other places I'd choose to ride this weekend.

…go next weekend, or the weekend after

or wait until there has been a prolonged period of dry weather, will mean its a bike ride and not just destroying the bogs

+1, just do the responsible thing and leave it until it dries out

Very impressed by the number of people saying to wait till it's properly dry.

There was a phase a while back of numpties saying " ah it's been resurfaced, it doesn't need to be dry any more"

For Cut Gate to the the epic masterpiece that it can be, leave it till it's properly dry or frozen solid.

Also, cut gate isn't really a big peak ride, if you do the out and back, it's 2-3hrs on a normal bike.

Ok, so no Cut Gate

Will probably do some Ladybower loops from Hope, but stick to the hard tracks

I know, I know, but I work away all week, so tend to try not to disappear for a full day on a normal short weekend

I feel like I missed that bit 🤔
It was a nice ride but I don't really recall anything standout from most other rides in the area.

Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful area to ride in and a lovely ride to do, but epic masterpiece? 🤔

What's this out and back nonsense? It's only ridden as an extension to the lady bower/hope loop isn't it?

I did some stuff around Ladybower then out to Langett side and back up via the North American bit then some more stuff around Ladybower during the February dry spell, on my motor assisted MTB.
There were a few steep steppy bits coming up out of Ladybower which I pushed due to incompetence but everything else was fine.
I wouldn't do it after rain or on a BH weekend.

There's a *carry* out of lady bower for sure!

The hardest thing about the ride though is deciding if the cafe at Langsett is start and finish or mid point.
I guess that's the bit that makes it an epic master piece.

The real joy of cut gate is in the nadgery tech climb from east to west. To do that ride on an ebike would just be a bit too meh

First off, this is the Peak, so the bar for Epic Masterpieces is a helluva lot lower than places like the Lakes 🙂

But you basically answered yourself in the following....

1) You did it when it was wet. The key point I made was that in order for it to be an epic masterpiece it needs to be dry.

2) You took an eeb. As you rightly say, it's not steep enough to warrant an eeb. The climb from the north side is absolutely brilliant on a bike. Each section is eminently rideable, but stitching them together is amazing. I doubt you get anything like the same satisfaction from an eeb.

Its one of my regular rides from the Langsett end. Done it in all sorts of conditions all year round. Its not at its best when we have had a bit of rain and it seems thats all we have had over the last two weeks.

It wouldn't be my choice on a Bank Holiday unless going at the crack of dawn or much later in the day. The bits where yuo want to fly down will be full with a line of walkers from the Langsett side assuming you can get parked

If you're going on an ebike, you could add in an extra loop over Whinstone Lee Tor. From ladybower, take the bridleway by Grindle Clough, over Whinstone Lee Tor, down towards cut throat bridge but turn right where the bridleway forks before you get to the road. Then use the bridleway (that runs parallel to the A57) back to ladybower.

I did this last year. Riding from Fairholmes, over cut gate, round Langsett back over cut gate via north America and then down to WLT. It ended up at just over 30 miles and around 3000'

The extra bit was conceived once I'd been over cut gate and back and found myself wanting a bit more. I don't think cut gate on its own will satisfy your craving for epic.

Even at 30 miles/3000' I still had 20% battery left. If I wasn't feeling like I'd been thrown down a set of stairs at that point, I could have carried on.

The worst bit nowadays for eroding cut gate in the wet is the bit across the grass on the southern end imo. I.e. between the end of the flags and where you start to skirt around bull clough/drop more steeply to slippery stones.
All the stuff climbing out of langsett rides ok nowadays IMO. Yes there are some peat bogs which we should avoid riding on when wet, however all of them can be avoided by staying on the already exposed, rocky bits of track.

But I admit it is better in the dry (isn't everything, though?)
