Hi
Long story short I've knackered my 135x12 thru axle but have a 142x12 spare my question is can I shave 7mm off and use it to replace my 135x12 until I can order another??
What say you STW??
Ta

Guessing it might depend on the make/type fitted mate?

In the meantime I'd get one ordered tonight to keep the potential wait as small as possible.

As long as you can take 3.5mm off each side, and keep the edges parallel, I don’t see why not. Some alloy axles have steel end caps, so watch out for that. In reality I would just wait for the new axle though....

Actually are you talking about the axle within the hub, or the skewer that goes into the frame? Not sure I’d want to take 7mm off that. Assuming the threads are the same.

I meant the maxle and yes the threads are the same it'll tighten up just won't be screwed into the frame as much I've ordered one now just wondering whether to use the hardtail instead safe than sorry and all that

You would probably have to cut new threads on it as they are likely to be pretty much exactly the right depth for the 142 set up. You could just use 7mm of washers on the drive side to pad it out but that will upset the chain line on the big rings, so not recommended if you live anywhere hilly. Otherwise, set the stops to limit use of top 2 gears and give it a go. If threaded bit comes right through the frame you won't need to shave anything off and may find that you need only a few mm of washers to pad it out, depending on how much spare thread you have.

Thanks welshfarmer I did put the 142mm in and tightened all the way into the frame then put spacers to fill the 7mm gap it ran OK on a 1x10 but always had that nagging feeling in the back of my head and kept looking at the spacers.
It's a Corsair Marque so nothing on it is simple!!!!!
I've ordered a BETD 135x12 for the frame hopefully delivered tomorrow so I'll make do with the hardtail for now
Thanks all
